Regular Unleaded vs Premium Gas

Alright guys, I heard several different stories. Does anyone know the truth...

Story #1 :The gas you buy from the pump is all the same. There's no such thing as Premium gas. All the gas comes from the same tank, you're just paying more if you choose the premium pump.

Story #2: They did a study and gas is gas. The premium gas doesn't help or hurt your car. You should just buy regular unleaded...same difference.

Does anyone know the truth? Should you spend more money for premium gas or not? does it even exist?

Uh...

It's all unleaded, it's illegal to run leaded gas in most places.

As far as regular versus premium goes, it's based on the octane rating (87, 89, 91, 92, 94, etc).

Engines that make more power, heat, and higher compression (turbo/supercharger, nitrous, high compression NA, etc) will experiencing pinging and knocking, which will start to break things.

Premium gas won't do anything for most economy engines, but most modified or high end cars require it.

if you put the cheap gas in my wife's car, it runs like shit, knocks and gets horrible mileage

if you put premium gas in her car, it runs smooth and seems to get better mileage

I can always tell when she gets the cheap gas, you can definately hear and feel the difference.

I don't know how cheap gas would be in my car, I wouldn't do that to my car.
