Too many "wannabe" designer out there?

Is it just me or is the designing industry becomming infected with people who think that it requires no talent whatsoever to create designs and websites?

Is there any other business where people from one day to another can start a business and hahahahaha designer on the business card the next day?

- Is it just me? i dunno, but it is really starting to amaze me how shitty some of the designers out there are.

agreed, also these design contests piss me off...50 designers do work and one guy gets paid, shows how desperate some are for work and thats just sad.

agreed, and then again contests can be a good way to "show off" your designing skills. - but it all depends on how the contest is made i guess.

There is a difference between wannabe and aspiring. A fine line though. Everyone starts somewhere. even webmasters are
a dime a dozen these days.

The only one who wins is the one throwing the contest most of the times

It's the one's that you don't see improve that are more than
likely to let you down. There are the gifted, and the people that
have to work hard and learn, and practice. Im proud to be
one that works hard to create better.

Its not just you.
http://gofuckyourself.com/showthread...hreadid=268455

People seem to think that throwing together a few cute images makes a design convert. When I used to build galleries for other programs, I MADE SURE my designs converted. Isnt that what its all about anway? If my client was not happy with work(rarely) I would refund or re-do.

Seems like evey time I contract GFY kiddies I get fucked over with shit that has NOT been tested for conversion.

Baaaa, WTF you wanna do.

I am not considering myself as a "top notch" designer allthough this is my fulltime job. Problem is that a lot of people think only the prettiest designs convert. Than why is it that I have a huge recurring client list?

As you can obviously see my designs aren't anything near Mike W's designs (designswise and pricewise) but who knows wich is converting better? Unless you tried it all you will never know who make the best converting sites wich is way more important than the most beautifull site.

You've got to look through the eyes of the surfer, not the webmaster. They only want the porn and probably don't give a fuck about the layout at all. If they wanted a piece of art they would go to the museum.

Dude no offense, but if 'pretty design' didn't sell you think this is why companies like Coke and McDonalds pour millions/billions into new designs constantly. With your theory you would buy your soda in a transparent plastic bag..yummy. Think about it

Not offended at all just trying to follow up in a nice thread.

Anyway I don't think that you can put porn and coca cola in the same box at all, think about that

If you're a good designer it will show in your work. You can tell the filter junkies out there and they easily get weeded out. I'm never in fear of being challenged as a designer because I know I'm good. It's going to take more than a 15 year old with a pirated copy of Photoshop the threaten me.

I also joined the Graphic Artist Guild about 4 years ago and they they hard to maintain a certain level of professionalism with all their members.

Well, as for the contests and shit, some people are desperate for money and some of us(im new in the industry) just want to show what we can do and shit, so people can msg and ask for work if they like what we do. And if we win the price nice

And no offense to anyone, but 80% of the designers in here suck.
not pointing to anyone, just saying of what i have seen.

And Pretty designs convert very well, Pretty means different shit from the rest of the Sites out there (paysites, tgp's, freesites , banners, fpa's, etc...)

But also the amateur design convert well in some cases, but if u make a Pretty Amateur Design :D

I was only trying to get oppionions here - and your clearly stated yours

In general i think there is room for everyone - i can however still be amazed what some people are trying to sell of as designs - sure different tastes and all that... but thats just my oppinion ;)

I'm not a designer? Does that help anyone? I think the most important thing is the result and it doesn't matter if the result was done by a "unkown" or a "well-known" designer.

i started in '99 and knew shit about photoshop or html, in 5 years i taught myself every prog there is and recently i started a design site. So basically it took me 5 years of training, i'm no mikeW but i sure can tell the difference between a good design and utter crap

and to be honest..there are too many crappy designers out there
who just got their copy of CS cracked

Questions about whether design is necessary or affordable are quite beside the point: design is inevitable.

The alternative to good design is bad design, not no design at all.

Go into your house and redesign it the same way your web sites are designed.

The basement will be the first thing you see, the kitchen will be unreachable except through the bedroom and both bathrooms, the bedroom will be on six different floors, and the dog will be in every room at once.

Design without the ego.

there are to many idiots in the adult scene period, whether its someone saying they can program, a designer saying his stuff converts or a content producer that calls himself a "professional". people think they can just enter the scene, not pay any dues and compete with seasoned pros. this is why u see so many people in and out.

Form follows function has always been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in union.

You are a "top notch" designer. The work you have done is a testament to that fact.

90% of those who run companies, wether theyre mainstream or adult, dont know fuck about what looks good or how a site should be designed..

they have no aesthetic whatsoever.

ive designed sites for some mainstream as well as adult that were dictated to me from begining to end by these so called "executives" that are so embarrasing that i dont put my name on them.

well-known designer enhances the result no matter how you look at it, hell if you go with award winning designer, wouldn't you feel good about having your project showcasing in thier top-notch portfolio?
