ANAHEIM, Calif. - (KRT) - Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction could remain closed for months as state inspectors investigate the ride's third accident in less than a year, a state spokesman said.

Three people were injured Thursday when two trains collided in the ride's loading station at 5:05 p.m. A 10-year-old boy and his parents complained of neck pain. They were treated at a hospital and released Thursday night, Disney said.

Dean Fryer, a spokesman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, which inspects theme-park rides, said inspectors were on the scene Thursday night and resumed their work at 7 a.m. Friday.

"It could be weeks, it could be months" before DOSH investigators determine the cause of the accident and certify it as safe to reopen, Fryer said. "We will look at whether there's a repetitive issue that needs to be addressed."

A Disney spokesman declined to comment.

Marcelo Torres, 22, of Gardena was killed Sept. 5 when the front car of a Big Thunder train derailed and smashed into the car that Torres was riding in. Ten other people were hurt.

Investigators found that a safety wire had not been secured, causing a guide wheel to fall from the train.

DOSH closed the 25-year-old roller coaster for six months. It reopened March 10 after the division completed a lengthy investigation and signed off on mandated improvements, including the retraining of maintenance workers.

Two trains collided again April 3 during testing with no passengers on board. One train was badly damaged. The ride was closed for a few hours, and the state ordered Disney to retrain operators.

Wylie Aitken, a Santa Ana attorney who represents the Torres family and Vicente Gutierrez, who was injured in the same accident, said news of the latest accident "opens up wounds that haven't healed" for his clients.

There is a "serious question of whether this particular ride has exceeded what you might say is its shelf life," Aitken said. "It's an aging ride and it has these difficulties. One has to wonder whether any changes they've made since the tragic death of Marcelo Torres are merely cosmetic and not substantive."

Since California regulators began charting such accidents in mid-2001, more than 35 people have claimed injuries from riding Big Thunder, an analysis of state records shows.
