The Village: OFFICIAL SPOILER THREAD!!!

Ok, Seriously I read about 10 posts earlier and people are begging for it to be spoiled. So here you go.

I SWEAR I'm going to ruin it so don't read if you don't want to know.

First WARNING!

Last Chance....

Ok, here goes.

The movie is based on these people that live in a village, surround by the woods. In the woods are creatures that will kill them if they cross into the woods. "Beyond the border."

The "creatures" that live in the forrest are really the town elders. That keep the towns people in fear so they won't escape (that's plot twist #1)

Now for plot twist #2 It's not set in the 1800's in a village in some remote part of america where they settled, It's set on a nature preserve in present day probably in upstate New York. These crazy people that were tired of a society where their friends and loved ones were being killed and attacked (just like in every major city) decided to go live on a nature preserve and raise their families like it was the 1800's and keep them there by keeping them afraid of venturing away.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1 hour and 30 mintes for plot twist number 1 to reveal itself. 15 minutes later plot twist 2 reveals itself. 5 minutes later the movie is over and you're sitting there as the lights come back on in the theatre, and if you listen close you can hear people all around you saying, "Is that it? Are you fucking kidding me?"
The rest of the movie is surrounded with a weak story of a retard (sir laughs alot) that almost kills another retard(sir shut the fuck up), and so a third retard(miss can't see for shit) has to go out beyond the border to the "other towns" and collect medicine for the retard that's almost dying.
While on her journey to look for another town (did I mention she's blind?) she manages to kill the first retard, and she's blind. Then she finds an old road she's blind) and runs along the road (she's blind) and scales the fence surrounding the preserve, (she's blind) and flags down a nature preserve security guard (he gives her the meds from the first aid kit), then she finds her way BACK to the village (she's blind), and saves her boyfriend the retard that doesn't speak.
I can't even begin to tell you how many holes are in the story. (Think Swiss Cheese)
This movie is literally FULL OF RETARDS!!! It's a retarded movie filled with retards and I feel retarded for having watched it.
I guess I'm not your average movie watcher. I'm a movie buff, and I really wanted there to be more to the story than a simple gag.
I really am a movie buff.
I think everybody is being undeservedly harsh on this movie.
If it were some unheard of little indy 'horror' movie .. by an unheard of director .. that I just picked up on a whim at the video store ... I would have been really impressed.
Yeah, it didn't live up to the expectations set by his previous work .. but it's still far better than most of the rubbish on the shelves. So what if there's no mindbending twists? Most movies follow such a bland form that I'm grateful whenever one does anything a little different.
And, since this is the spoiler thread, I thought the scene where the (supposed) 'real monster' finds her in the woods was one of the creepiest/scariest scenes in recent memory. I can't say why.. it just was for me, at the time, while I was sitting there.
And the whole audience gasped when the retard withdrew the knife from Joaquin Phoenix's gut.
It was just so out-of-the-ordinary to remove the main character mid-movie ... with no lead-up. .. you're waiting for the movie to get to the point where he finally ventures off into the woods to face <whatever> and then BAM! - he's knocked out of the whole story. I think that's a fucking brilliant thing to do.
- it may not be witty, but it's ballsy.
I watched some piece of shit scifi series one night (earth) or something like that.. with 2 gay aliens in a spaceship that change the world, telons, taelons, tolons what ever they were called... dunno if you know what I'm talking about..
..anyways, that episode I watched had a storyline exactly like this. Someone had to make an emergency landing in the woods and there was this 1900th century village that nobody ever left.. and if they did they never got back (the town elder killed them in reality).
I disagree. I don't go to movies based on the director's previous work. I enjoyed the trailers and was hoping it would be a creepy movie. It was not. I was mislead, and that's what I didn't like. And then after watching it, I didn't think the story was as good as it could have been.
I agree, there is a lot of shit out there. Add this one to the list. I wasn't expecting a mindbending twist. Not all films need a great twist. Can you imagine if "Life is Beautiful" had a twist?? The father goes behind the wall and instead of getting shot he comes out with the gun and shoots down all the nazi's ala Rambo style? Now THAT would be an unexpected twist.
And I agree he tried to break out of the formula. He always does that, but this time he just chose a weak story as the setting. I think the IDEA is good, but the STORY made it weak. The STORY of the 3 retards made it weak. The IDEA behind the STORY is pretty cool.
Maybe it should have been more about the Walker family instead of involving so many characters. When you try to involve too many characters you need to spend time building them, and that takes time. I don't feel he spent enough time with them (all the characters that he introduced). We could have had more time with them if he had cut the dead boy in the beginning, and the dinner sequence right after that. It doesn't establish enough. So cut it out.
I think it could have worked better if maybe the bling girl was the one that had been injured and William Hurt would have more motive to send someone out of the village.
Also... if HE is the one that got them there, WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T HE GO?!?!?!!?
He could have just said, "I'll go! I'll go challenge the creatures." and just gone and got the meds and that would have been that. We could have still had the plot twist at the end, and it would have made MORE sense!
That is just the beginning of the holes I mentioned.
Go rent Ju-on, and Ju-on2 if you want creepy.
I agree it was trippy when she goes behind the tree and it's just standing right there, and then when it leaps at her, (of course it was mostly the music) but the audience did get scared.
But here's a question... How could a retard that could barely sit still and could barely peace together sentences, "Bad color, bad color", steal a costume, (THAT'S MADE OF BAD COLOR) and break out of his "time out" room, sneak out of the village in broad daylight with the costume, and track a blind girl thru the woods, when he had NO IDEA which direction she was going in?
Pretty smart for a retard, don't you think?
In an ensamble piece there is no main character. However yeah I agree, where the fuck did that come from?? See what I mean, about the story is weak it has no motivation. The IDEA is good the STORY is weak.
You're right it's not witty it's ballsy and it didn't work. It seemed VERY forced. Like he needed to somehow get the girl to the edge of the preserve so he could have that plot twist and didn't know how to get her out there, so they just said "fuck it let's just make this retard stab that retard. We'll use a rectracting knife, which we haven't seen those for a few years, so people won't be expecting it, and we'll show the knife go in and out and they'll be so shocked they won't even question why we did it."
But that's just how I feel about it. I would never tell someone NOT to see it, because we all have different views on movies.
Yeah, like I said in the other village thread, I personally can enjoy movies just for playing with interesting ideas - in spite of plot holes or other problems. But I understand when other people can't forgive / look past that. I just don't think this film should get a rep. as a total waste of time because it does have some redeeming qualities.
I disagree there. I really don't give a shit about getting to know every minor character. That background-establishing that most movies start off with makes me want to fast forward. I can assume all those traditional family&friends relationships ... without having to sit through them. Unless there is something important there, skip it. Get to the ideas.
You're right - it didn't end up making sense. But, before it didn't make sense, I was beginning to wonder if he would turn out to be some sinister character who would dress up and try to murder his own daughter to protect the fantasy he'd created. Yeah, maybe that was the predictabe path to take, but it might have worked out better. I dunno... There was a good foundation which could have been taken in many interesting directions. I don't know if I like the one he chose.
yeah, been on my to-rent list for ages
- and you remind me that this scene ...
.. sort of reminds me a bit of the elevator scene in The Eye.
- the 'standing there' tension ... knowing something terrifying is right behind you ... knowing it could grab you whenever it wants, at it's leisure ... you're already too close to hope it won't catch you .... I like that better than a chase.
I really don't know what was supposed to be wrong with this guy. He wasn't your typical drooling retard ... It's possible that he wasn't supposed to to be low-IQ, just disturbed in some other manner ... but he didn't seem to have any clearly diagnosable disorder either. Maybe M. Night ignored this issue. ... but the role wasn't defined very well.
Yeah. I'm going to continue to argue it's at least worth a few dollars to see . . .
though, perhaps not after reading this spoiler thread.
and any money made in the 'horror' genre just encourages studios to greenlight more horror, which is what I want to see . . . it seemed like there was a shortage of funding for serious horror, until recently.
I really liked the film.
I love his directing style.
Colors and angles are done with flair.
It's no sixth sense...but an enjoyable movie in my opinion.
(Although, I'm not surprised that peopel get pissed at the ending considering the trailer hype about a monster movie.)
Actually, they are all very good actors. Maybe that was another let down, for me.
But actually, we DO agree. I don't need to see all of them either. That's what I'm saying. Eliminate a few characters, so that I can get to know the main ones better. Then I can have more sympathy for them.
I've enjoyed debating the film with you.
It's about time I meet someone on this board that can enjoy film as much as me.
