Maxtor OR WesternDigital which

I narrowed down my choices to these two. The drives all have the same features but the WD costs a little more. Which one is a more reliable option.

I use both.. My main drive now is a WD raptor 10k rpm drive and I like it.. don't think I'd go back to a 7k rpm.

For just a normal drive either is ok.

I though it would be the other way around. I wonder why the WD costs more

I have had one of each fail me, but that was after two years of service in each case.

Now, I use a drive, at most, 18 months.

If I had to choose between the two... I'd go WD without hesitation.

If I had a wider choice, I'd choose Seagate. Their drives are almost invincible.

Well.. i've got a 160gb Maxtor Master, and 200gb WD Slave...
Both have fucked up on me at least once but I keep backups, so I can't complain.

Seagate pushed their warrenty back up to 3 years. Try them. I've got WD in all my machines, haven't had any problems.. yet.

You picked two crappy hard drive companies. I only use Seagate on my systems. They are quiet and reliable. I've tried all others. I don't care if warranty is less on Seagate because I never need to use them.

I had plenty of Hitachi/IBM drives go bad. WD and Maxtor made too much noise for me.

I also had a Samsung drive that was pretty good, but it went bad shortly, so I'm not sure I can recommend them yet.

IBM is the best if you want to pay out the ass.

Most people choose between western digital and maxtor because IBM, hitachi, and rarely seagate are not at best buy, lol. Maxtor's always have rebates that cutthe cost in half so you will find cheap fuckers that like them. Western Digital is is much much better. I have a terabyte of WD storage and I move 50GB files from one HD to another many times a day. These fuckers never wear out.

Same here. I've replaced 2 WD with Maxtors. I still have a 5 year old Maxtor that has taken a beating over the years.

I much prefer Seagate, quiet and reliable.
WD and IBM drives have failed me in the past.
I have never tried a Maxtor.

Go with the nest cost to size ratio because the difference isn't much as far as quality...

Every single Maxtor I have ever had (at least 6 that I remember) has crapped out on me in a matter of less than 6 months. I prefer Seagate. Western Digital is an acceptable alternative, but they don't seem to last quite as long as Seagate. Plus, Seagate seems to be quieter.

Just go by the MTBF ratings.
Personally, seagate then WD would be my two choices.
