Putting A Dog To Sleep - Worst Day Ever

I had to put my female rottie (Gretchen) to sleep yesterday that I've had for almost 11 years...

cried like a baby...still pretty bummed out today...

does that make me a total chump?

amazing that the death of a pet feels as bad if not worse than when some people die...

Take care of yourself. Do things you enjoy, and nothing wrong with feeling sad over it for little while.

You were able to give her a good, happy life - more than many dogs get. I think she would want you to go get a little Rottweiler puppie from the pound now.

Any male who has had a long relationship with a good dog knows what you are feeling..............

What you are feeling is a tribute to her....

Not a bad reason to get a little drunk.

Yeah... man sorry! I had ot put my Golden down after 13 years not that long ago. I still miss her.

I did however, pick up a dog at the pound about 5 months ago. Total mutt and it was a stray. Best thing i ever did!

true enough, she did have a pretty cool life for a dog...

I don't know if I could handle getting another one right now, I feel really bad for the male that's about 3-4 months older than her...I can tell he finally knows somethings wrong....

That is one of the worst things

I had to do that once and I had to hold my dog and talk to him while he was going to sleep.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I grew up around dogs and I have a staffie bull terrier now who really is part of the family.

I personally feel that when losing a dog, the biggest compliment you can pay it is to go out and get another one so to try and fill the loss ( you can never replace a dog but it is the next best thing imo ) and continue the happy times.

Actually, it makes you pretty human. Sorry you lost Gretchen, but I'm sure your decision was best for her. It gets better with time (looking into the formal living room where I have two small boxes sitting on the mantle).

I just got back from my second visit to the emergency vet. One of my Pixie Bobs had a severe allergic reaction to her allergy shot last night. She could barely breathe by the time I got her to the ER. She's doing better now.. 12 hours later.. but still not out of the woods.

Still missing my 18 year old that died a year and a half ago. It was like losing a child but fortunately I didn't have to make the decision to put her to sleep. She had been having a rough time and I think she just had a massive heart attack because she yelped out loud sat up then fell over and I held her as she went on.

The only thing worse is losing a child.

One of my most beloved shepherds I've ever had, had terminal cancer a couple years ago. The night before I was scheduled to go in and put her down at the Vets, I knelt down beside her, closed my eyes and said a prayer,

"Dear God, please take my precious Jessie gently and peacefully in her sleep tonight, I can't bear the pain again of having to watch them take the life out of another one of my Shepherds."

I kissed her goodnight, stroked her head softly, gave her a look in her eyes telling her I loved her with all my heart and went to bed.

At about 6:00 am I felt a rush of chilled air above me and jolted up out of bed. I ran over to her, saying her name but she was motionless and had incredibly passed on in her sleep as I had prayed for.

Sorry for your loss. I recently put one of my dogs and my cat of 14 years down within 2 weeks of each other (cancer). I always stay with my animals when they are put down. Its the worst feeling in the world next to losing a human family member.

Things get better each day. She led a long life you did a hell of a job.

What a nice story, almost made me cry... and glad at the same time that the prayer worked. I was a great sheperd fan too until I found a tiny yorkie.. she passed away in my arms 3 weeks ago after a surgery, poor thing.

I've had to do this twice over the years, here I am 30 something years old and the last time I cried like a 3 year old for about a week.

I started crying again after hearing that your vet can make a house call and put your dog down at home, I really hope I don't have to do that again, but I'd rather do it that way over bringing them to the cold drab animal hospital where they usually equate that place to the pain of shots and the smells of other distressed animals.

I had them both cremated, I couldn't live with the idea of some medical student playing doctor with them, the last one by itself, so I have a good feeling its all him, when I go, I want them snuggled in at my feet.

Now I am getting misty eyed...

I had a dog for 14 years, he was getting old, he barked in the middle of the night about 4am, I went down on the floor to see what he wanted, he put his paws on my hands and he died in my arms. I was devastated for about 3 months...

Man I can't even imagine that as we just had our first a few years ago and is by far the most important thing in my life atm...

This does feel 'almost' what I'd imagine loosing a kid would be like though...in a way our 2 dogs have been our kids for 99% of our married life...just a little over 12 years now....

Was talking to the wife tonight and I guess the feeling of 'loosing a kid' makes sense since dogs and pets never really 'grow up' and leave the house, etc...they are always dependent on you, etc...

Man, that was an amazing story and I'm glad that your prayer was answered...

Thanks to all for all the kind words...

I usually don't get all bent out of shape like this...I don't think I've ever missed someone so much since my grandmother that raised me died...many years ago...
