(Article) Referrer Marketing and SE Rankings

Synopsis:
Using referrer marketing to increase SE rankings

+++++++++++++

One of the earlier, most popular forms of mass referrer marketing was that
of 'amazon.com' spam. Typically, a webmaster would click on the link in the
belief that for some reason amazon.com was linking to their website. After
realizing that their link could not be found they would leave the page and
think about it no more. However, the premise of this kind of referral
marketing was to allow the marketer to take credit (via amazon.com's cookie
system) for any purchase within the next 24 hours.

Amazon really had (have?) it set up so that the very first cookie sticks, and any further clicks from other affiliates don't override it? Wow.

I believe other affiliate links would override it, but the beauty of this technique is that there's already such a substantial customer base belonging to Amazon that it's highly likely that person clicking your affiliate link would be to Amazon within a short time period making purchases. And you'd get credit for the sale, because he clicked your affiliate link in the ref logs.
