Google AdWords Affiliate Policy Change (no Pics)

Sorry if someone already posted it, but I just got the following email from AdWords

Hello from the Google AdWords Team:

In January 2005, Google will incorporate a new affiliate advertising policy that is designed to provide a better user and advertiser experience.

What is changing:

With this new affiliate policy, we'll only display one ad per search query for affiliates and parent companies sharing the same URL. This way, users will have a more diverse sampling of advertisements to choose from. As always, your ad will be displayed based on its Ad Rank for given searches, which is determined by a combination of your ad's maximum cost-per-click (price) and clickthrough rate (performance).

For instance, if a user searches for books on Google.com or anywhere on the Google search and content networks, Google will take an inventory of ads running for the keyword books. If we find that two or more ads compete under the same URL, we'll display the ad with the highest Ad Rank.

How this will affect you:

If you're an affiliate, this means that you no longer need to identify yourself as an affiliate in your ad text. However, your current ad text will continue to display your affiliate status until you change it.

Affiliates or advertisers using unique URLs in their ads will not be affected by this change. Please note that your Display URL must match the URL of your landing page, and you may not simply frame another site.

What you should do:

We recommend that you continue to monitor your ads' performance and optimize your ads as needed to ensure they're bringing you the best results. Please visit our Optimization Tips page for more information.

By improving our ad relevancy, we believe that users will have a better search experience, which will help you reach more potential clients in the future. We'll continue to make improvements to AdWords over time to further improve the user experience and help increase the performance of your ads.

We look forward to continue providing you with the most effective advertising available.

Sincerely,
The Google AdWords Team

Ok, for a Summary for GFY:

1.) Only one Ad per Domain: Which means Affiliates would have to compete with their Sponsors, so one Affiliate could be lucky if he promotes a stupid Sponsor who doesn't see the chance, but most Ads the link to paysite.com will be from Sponsors in future.

2.) Landing Pages are ok: So Affiliates can make their own Landing Pages and link from there to the Sponsor. Makes things more complicated, but maybe doesn't hurt ROI, but I think it will hurt Sales Volume because somebody who Searches for paysite.com will click on an Ad for paysite.com and not on an Ad for landingpage.com

And I wonder what they are going to do about tracking URLs like refer.ccbill.com ???

Well that's pretty fucking stupid. (and smart)
Not something I would do, but I'm sure there's alot of good that will come from this.

Do you guys think this would increase or decrease your roi?
Less direct competition is allways great ... but in certain cases I see a few issues.

I'd say it will increase the ROI for some, and decrease it for many others (affiliates)

It's good news if you think about it. It forces people to come up with their own copy instead of relying so strongly on their sponsor. Moreover, there's less of a burnout rate on the surfer side.

As I see it it's good news for people that have the backround (financial, resources etc.) to come up with something of their own, but I think if your only reaction to this change is to throw up a landing page then it's bad news for you.

So it makes the stronger stronger and the weaker weaker, and that's IMHO never good for an industry at all.

But we'll see the outcome, hopefully I belong to the stronger side

Actually, anything that forces people to be more creative instead of just jumping on the bandwagon moves the collective ball forward.

So what's this saying for someone that's brand spanking new? *raises his hand*

Once I have a domain, and a few niche galleries under my name, will that mean anyone searching for a specific niche that I have created a few galleries for, will then be directed to my domain?

I'm trying to understand how this affects me in particular when it comes to SEO, and the trickles of traffic I'll get from someone typing in a few keywords.

That change only affects AdWords and has nothing (well next to nothing) to do with the Free Listings of Google.

Take a look here to understand what's Google AdWords about:

It would still be funny to know what they'll do about ccbill.com tracking URLs, I hope Google doesn't see them all as one Merchant.

Just thought about that too
But as $5 said, it will force people to be more creative and actually put some effort into converting the traffic. So maybe it'll all work out in the end.

It will be posted here: https://adwords.google.com/select/news/index.html

As far as I know, it will be on or around Jan 12th.

Those who are actually serious about their Adwords management won't have to worry, as this issue was raised weeks ago.

I think this summary will be pretty useful to most around here. I received the email like 3 days ago i think.
