MADRID (Reuters) - Five officers of Spain's Civil Guard police were killed Tuesday when a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and plowed into their highway checkpoint in the early hours of the morning, officials said.

The truck driver was only slightly injured in the accident, which took place around 43 miles north of Madrid, a Civil Guard spokesman said.

The checkpoint had been set up to provide extra security for the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security that starts Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of last year's train bombings that killed 191 people in Madrid.
