let's talk about opening up a club

Within 3 years, I am hoping to open up a club in Montreal

as a clubber, it is very easy for me to see what is wrong with the clubs I go to.

I want to open up a club with a GORGEOUS venue, waterfall walls, beautiful lighting, marble floors, and what not.

does anybody have experience with clubs? or investing in some? I would love to chat and learn a bit about it, what it takes, how much money it takes, the mob, etc.

let's talk here or on ICQ! 178340550

We should start mirrored clubs one in Orange County and one there. With live telecasts between the two.

I like nice clubs too.

There are a bunch of other businesses that have a much lower startup and have higher returns. Clubs tend to fall off after a while

bdjuf,

Being local to Montreal for a decade, I've seen more then one "nice" club/restaurant come and be out of business within the year. Much of your success is going to be in how much you dump into the place, your location, the time of year you open, and what you do in terms of marketing -- it's very conceivable that you won't see a real return for 6 months to a year. At the very least, you'll likely need have that much on hand to float the place and push hard on advertising.

As well, if you're looking to open a club in Montreal then be prepared for the visit from the HA. Not an "if" usually, as much of a "when". If you've already got your relations set there though, then that's one big obstacle you can check off

Either way...best of luck!! A really nice bar in Montreal is something I could handle....

HA = Hells Angels?

How much control and power do they have? I thought Canada was a safe and pleasant country!

I don't think you should start something like that unless you have experience or you have a partner with experience. Another thing to remember, is just because a club may look "cool", doesn't mean its a success and profitable. There are many, many very busy restaurants and bars that go under simply because they can't make profit.

Busy & "cool" != success.

most montreal club owners dream about making the money you do

as an investment it is poor, might be fun though

don't expect to make a profit though especially in a market like montreal full of arabs and hatians that infest your club without 2 nickels to scrape together to even buy drinks

miami, ny, la is where the club money is, the other markets are peanuts

Hey Sly -- the HA have different degrees of presence and power thru Canada. Montreal is one of their strongholds, but since the biker wars they've been trying to keep their business in their own realm. But every few years, we seem to get a rash of slayings.

However, their presence in the club scene in Montreal is pretty well known. They run the club drug scene and, eventually, they always want their claim their share and gain another space to run that business. Most every club owner I've talked to has had the "visit" at some point.

Seriously, if you want to open a club work in one first so you understand how they work. when i was a teenager i would go to them and think someday im gonna open my own. Then i worked six years for one of the largest Dance Club operators in NYC and i realized i would need a few million and a shitload of luck. I ended up producing raves.

basically if you can speak french the quebec government will let you live there because no real canadians want to speak the language and this is there only way to preserve it

they come from war torn countries and most of them carry knives

on any given weekend night there are dozens of fights that spill out to the street on crescent alone, most involve the arabs and there are many stabbings and shootings

the crime rate in montreal is comparable to some of the worst areas in the us

it is a great place to party still, but realize that it is very dangerous

maybe open a club would be like opening a paysite:

learn to build traffic first before starting the paysite.

Get one of the production companies (you know, the same people who pay Paulie Jr. and Mikey to goof off on camera) to help you develop, fund, and video your club. From beginning to end.

Agreed, the bars alone cost a fortune. If you use a high-tech system to regulate the amount of alcohol poured into each drink it can cost $1M right there. With a lot of foot traffic you'll make it back quickly, but obviously a heavy initial investment is required.

Find a handful of investors so after your club tanks (3 out of 4 do), you will still have made some $ but without all that risk.

Even the best clubs don't last long. Too trendy a biz. If you want to toss some bucks just for an ego kick, to have the VIP table permenantly reserved, and are in need of chicks, go for it.

If you do it, be sure to use OPM, not of dime of your own money.

Watch your bartenders and door people. If you are asleep at the switch, they will be all over your cash.

Make sure you realize in most cities you're going to be dealing with your local organzid crime guys who are going to want their cut.

Usually the cops will want a cut or hired as offduty security.

Have fun.

that is only because most crimes in montreal are not reported and even when they are the police will not investigate them

hangout outside any bar area on a weekend night and watch all the fights and stabbings, i've partied everywhere and montreal is definately the most violent city, i still love it though dont get me wrong

does anybody have experience with clubs? or investing in some? I would love to chat and learn a bit about it, what it takes, how much money it takes, the mob, etc.

it can be done. yes, still today. and i agree 2mil min. you will need at least 80-250k to assume the liquor license. i am sure that canada is pretty similar to the us as in the desire to collet hefty fees for the right to sell liquor.
