How polite are you ?

Having spent most of last evening in the city with people bumping into each other and not saying excuse me it made me wonder how many of us consider ourselves to be polite. I am not talking GFY standards of polite but rather what the real world would continue to be polite. Do you still say please, thank you and excuse me in public? My parents were very strict on such things when I was growing up so it is stil a part of me.

I am a very polite person, but in these days its like a light switch. Most of the time I am polite but if you are an asshole its turned off and you get a asshole...

I still am to a point but London knocked a lot of the polite out of me.

Try being polite getting on a tube in the morning rush hour and you just dont go anywhere..... I used to let people on before me - women, elders etc - now I just knock them out the way like everyone else, you dont get any thanks for it anyway and they would do it to you in a heartbeat.

But in general, yes.

yeah, I am a Londoner too but it isn't limited to London..I had the same experiences in America cities. Most of the time it doesn't bother me but someone bumped into me and made a huge deal of saying 'sorry' and I was struck by how weird it felt that someone had been polite.

I was brought up to be polite. I think it's just the question of respect to each other, humanity, kindness and so on...

Though our world seems to be rolling to a great hole. People become brutal nowadays...

And sometimes I have no wish to be polite with them at all.

That's not good.

Having a common code of behaviour means not constantly having to decide how to behave nor wondering always how people will behave towards you.

At least that is how it used to be and everyday life was a lot less stressful when I was younger. Etiquette, of which politeness is one facet, is the grease that oils the wheels of society and I have no idea why we apparently thought it would be smart to throw it out the window.

I still say please and thank you, apologize when necessary, hold doors open for ladies and stand up if a lady enters or leaves a room. Etc. I never use bad language in public, rarely at all, and I hardly ever raise my voice. There isn't a whole lot I can do about people who choose to behave differently, but I don't see that as a reason to change myself.

Sarah,

I was raised by a Texas Southern Baptist Grandmother. I think that says it all. I am NEVER "PC" when it comes to being polite. Get in my face, however, and that politeness quickly becomes your biggest problem of the day.

I've held doors open for women who "wanted to do it themselves." I usually make sure I'm "PC" at that point and let the fucker slap'em in the ass as they walk through, saying "Opps, you weren't watching."

Granny's training took hold. I've always say "excuse me" instead of "par-don" or "con permisso" here. Luckily for me, I don't have to put up with that "PC" crap here, only when I "visit" the US.

If someone here ISN'T courtesy-minded, I make it a point to let everyone around them know how stupid this one person is. I'm easy to get along with. I'm also one's worse nightmare, if they so deem it necessary.

EXAMPLE: Water in the street, not just wet, but water. I'm on the Harley and some pendejo speeds by, putting a wave over me. I catch up, detach my windowbanger from my hand levers and take out the fucker's windshield or rear window. And, please, don't think Harley people are afraid of "cagers." CAGER stupidity causes our "reach" to extend greatly. (..and you thought we just sat there and drove. LOL)

I open doors, get coffees, walk on the street side, preceed down and follow up stairs and escalators, all that stuff Granny taught me....still. Get "PC" with me and you're on your own.

I say please and thank you and excuse me and pardon me and all of those things. I'll hold a door open etc. When I used to work in retail, I'd often run nextdoor to the grocery store or drug store and people would mistake me for an employee, so I'd help them with things and tell them "well I dont work here, but I know the soap is on aisle 9" lol.

It's good to keep the "civil" in civilization.

I think i'm quite polite. I'll hold a door open for people. I always say please, may i, and thank you. I saw a woman struggling to carry some heavy bags in town a while ago, and offered to carry them for her. She couldn't really speak english, so it was a bit of a struggle to get her to understand what i meant. She got the jist of it and i carried them for about 15 minutes until i had to go in another direction.

I was brought up to say 'please' and 'thank you'. I let people with only a few items in front of me at the checkout if I have more than them, I give pedestrians the right of way and I let men that still believe in opening doors for women, the opportunity to do so. And I thank them

I am very mild mannered and polite - right up to the point someone tries to take advantage of that. Nothing wrong with holding open a door for someone, saying "thank you' and "you're welcome" etc.

Even on boards - when I write a brutal post ripping someone a new a-hole I almost always take a break and go work on something else for a few minutes, come back, re-read the post, and close the browser. Some things are better left unsaid. No point in being more hated than European Lee LOL. Besides, it's GFY. 9 out of 10 times, someone else will say what I was thinking, anyway. ;)

I'm very polite in real life, unless people REALLY piss me off, at which times my temper tends to get the better of me. I'm still quite liberal in the way I speak though and I won't hold back a "fuck that!" if that's what I feel like saying.

I consider myself very polite and take great pride when other parents tell me that our kids are so polite and well behaved.

If I get good service somewhere, I also try to make it a point to go out of my way to let a supervisor know, because I'm sure all they hear is complaints.

However, if I get bad service and want it rectified, I have NO problem being short, terse, and going over someone's head to get the problem fixed.

Yeah...I still say it, even as children are running into me and adults step on me. Having met me, Sarah....you know that I'm one of the short ones...if not for my fabulous hair and big mouth, I'd be invisible to the public.

I think, as I grow older, I notice more and more, that manners....seem to be degenerating....and anger is on the rise.
