Wtf?

"But what we're talking about here is a message to hopeless children in the inner city, and more importantly to the white kids in the suburbs who are going to grow up to be cops and judges."

I can see it now. Judge Smith giving harsh sentances to black people because 50 cent made him believe that black folks were depraved when he was a 13 year old wigger.

50 Cent is NOTa role model ... BUT sad to say - he DOES influence people/kids and they want to be like him

And as much as I (as an adult) like his music - it's irrefutable - the man said some insanely stupid and irresponsible shit here and should be further exposed for his idiocy http://www.youre.nu/?media=50promo&cat=wmv

On the other side, however, Bill O'Reilly and The O'Reilly Factor is garbage propoganda 95% of the time!

Its funny how people always give rappers a hard time about violence and sexual content. Than shows like Sex in the City, Sopranos and Desperate Houswive win awards.

I watch bill o' reilly...and i enjoy it...i rarely agree with him...

But this clip is a classic example of his close mindedness....

"he's been shot...i guess....DOZENS of times"

THE ENTIRE COMMERCIAL WAS ABOUT HIM BEING SHOT NICE TIMES!!!!!!

I agree that this commercial is probably not the best of things..but i'm more of the mindset to turn it off and not buy the shoes if you dont like it. Nothing hurts like getting hit in the bottom line

Finished watching it now....

Watch your kids people. Time to grow up and actually be parents. Would you let your kid hang out 5 hours a day talking with an uncle who would fill them full of crap such as violence, racism, and other "not-normal" behaviors? No...You'd think that Uncle Fred wasnt a good influence on your kid and you'd be around him when he was with Uncle Fred. Yet parents have 100 uncle fred's (ie, 100 different TV channels) babysit their kids and directly talk to them every day. GROW THE FUCK UP...IF YOU'RE NOT READY TO BE A PARENT...DONT HAVE CHILDREN....CONDOMS AND BIRTH CONTROL ARE A BEAUTIFUL THING (Unless you're extreme religious...then you're just fucked )

I have a 9 month old and a 7 year old and they watch NO TV ... NONE!

As a parent, it's my job to decide what's appropriate and what's not. My kids are fun loving, imaginative, smart and interesting children - all without the boob tube involved in their lives and growth.

That doesn't mean I don't watch TV - that doesn't mean I'm a super strict parent either ... I just don't see TV as necessary for their development and since they never have it ... they don't miss it.

It's not like they don't see it sitting in our living room and our bedroom - they just know that we feel TV is not appropriate for them (at least the 7yr old does) and accept it without question or argument!

I feel the same way about music on the radio. It's not necessary for my kid to hear "Candy Shop" and all the othe songs blaring with sexual innuendos and crap.

I want my kids to remain "untarnished" by BS and be joyful kids as long as possible without the influence of commercial TV and radio telling them what they should be like and what crap they should want!

I think it's an attempt to look cool to mask the fact that they have no talent.

No, and no - not very likely IMO.

She's in a private school whereby "media" like TV and the internet, (and mind numbing babysitter type entertainment like Xbox games) are not introduced until a later stage in their development.

She has lots of friends at school, and most of the parents are very involved with their children's day to day activities. I'm not kidding you or myself by saying what I said. I'm sure there are fucked up parents at the school and she's been exposed to fucked up kids with anger and behavior issues as well. In most cases (although not all) we're notified immediately of any problems with other children in the classroom and it's all dealt with at the school between the teachers, students and parents.

Oh, and we have the other kids come to our house for most play dates. That alleviates a lot of the issues that could arise that you mentioned.

I'm fortunate that I earn an incredible living (as does my wife) and we can both afford to be with our children and actually focus on raising them every single day. Most 9-5 working parents don't have the luxury to parent as we do.

Look, I'm not saying what we do is any better than any other parent - it's just our choice to try to raise our kids this way and hopefully avoid exposure to the things you mentioned as long as reasonably possible. Obviously it won't be forever.

IMHO it's in my children's best interest.

sounds like you have things pretty well under control. you have a plan for slow introductions to these things? ive been trying to figure out how much to show and when so i can explain it(before they think they know it all). better then getting blindsided someday to the "real world" when im not around.

Everything in due time I guess.

LOL

There are no REAL hard and fast rules - otherwise we'd all be great parents, have ALL the answers - with great kids and NO problems!

Our 7 yr old is a very cool kid and fun to be around. She's a very polite, caring, imaginative, playful and smart, fun little girl without the pressures of a pop culture influence on her.

Regarding TV ... the following is something from the school she attends, and very true. If parents can eliminate mind numbing TV and and all its pop culture influences - they would see a marked difference. I know it makes TV sound insidious - but it really is:

Quote:
The passivity inherent in watching television is increasingly recognized by educators and parents as counterproductive to the process of learning and growth in the young child. Our school has long been in the forefront of the movement against excessive television viewing: we are pleased that other professionals now voice the same opinion.

The fast pace and fragmented sequences of television work against the cultivation of concentration and imagination. For preschool and young elementary school children, imaginative play, such as listening to stories, watching and creating puppet shows, dressing up, baking, etc. foster in the child an active participation in the world around him or her. Because we aim to develop creative, fully engaged individuals, we urge parents of young children, to resist the convenience of television, and to involve their children in meaningful activities. Parents of children in the Upper School are asked to prohibit television during the school week and to limit their children?s access at other times.
The teachings of her school address the physical, emotional, and intellectual capacities of the developing child through an age-appropriate curriculum that integrates the disciplines of movement, fine arts, and practical arts into the study of humanities, science, math, and technology. Through the development of these capacities, the goal is to educate the whole human being in a healthy and balanced manner.

Sounds corny, I know - but the result thus far (in conjunction with how we raise her ouerselves) is a wonderful well rounded kid!
