Male Beta eats his offspring. (Pics)

Anyone have any luck with hatching Betas? It seems very hard timing when to take the male out. Second time trying here, 1st time we didn't get him out in time and he ate them all.

I just snapped this pic. You can see the male as he puts the babies back into the bubbles as they fall out. Takes them 2 days until they can swim. Suposedly AS SOON as they can swim you have to take out the male or he eats them.

Correct. You should remove him "AS SOON" as the fry become free-swimming.

Though it's cool to observe his parenting, you can never be sure when his hormones will flip, and babies become tummy-yummies.

By then, of course, you should have cultivated your infusoaria to feed the fry with -- yes, it's the best food and improves the chances of survival --

Pretty much...

"Infusoria is the collective name given to a host of tiny organisms that live in naturally conditioned water."

If you don't have time to leave a bucket out in the yard, most half-decent pet shops will sell you freeze-dried or live...

Put a feeder with tubfix at the oposite end of the tank from the nest and keep it filled as you start to suspect the fry are starting to swim.

I think damian2001 meant "tubifex" --

The Tubifex Worm (Tubifex tubifex), is indigenous to the muddy freshwater flats and marshes of Great Britain.

It is a commercially bred high-protein fish food -- sold in frozen, freeze-dried and live form at pet shops all over the world.

But, alas...

TOO BIG for baby Bettas to ingest.

My fucking typing is getting worse!!

Anyway, I meant for the adult male..... Keep him well fed and he is less likely to eat the young - and betas love tubifex - put them in a feeder at the top and away from the fry.

Brine shrimp would work but they would be all over that tank and look too much like the fry, which would be dangorous.
