breaking bad habits. Like quitting smoking.

Studies show that if you can do something consistently for 18 - 24 days it becomes a habit.

So if you were to quit smoking you'd really only have to fight the urge for 18 - 24 days then it gets so much easier that NOT smoking becomes your new habit.

For example if someone were on her 17th day of not smoking.. she'd only have 1 more day to reach a potential habit forming milestone. The next 6 days would be a breeze, and then it's pretty much home free.

Hang in there, kid... you can do it.

It's possible that fatigue is a bit "mental" in that your body is feeling "depressed" from the lack of a chemical that did act as a stimulant (ie nicotene).

It seems more people find greater energy overall once they stopped smoking.
Are you drinking lotsa water & keeping a good eating habit going?

ya, i only drink water (or iced tea), no soda. and i eat pretty good too, since I workout so much. so i steer clear of junk foods.

I'm on Day Three..... no cigarettes.

it's fucking killing me for sure.... but I just keep telling myself, "this shit may fucking kill me, but I'll die twitching and without a cigarette in my mouth."

As bad as it sucks.... and it does indeed suck pretty large..... it really comes down to 2 options: Smoke. Or don't.

It's up to each person to make the choice for themselves. So far, I'm choosing the "don't" one.

Everytime I try to quit smoking, it feels like my best friend just died. I guess that's the depression aspect of the withdrawl.

ya, thats how i kinda feel sometimes too. like, when im having a fight with my man, or hella nervous about something...times like those. but i have to keep reminding myself that smoking is NOT a "friend", it is my enemy because it wants to KILL me!

i've learned to just stop.....take in 2 REALLY DEEP breaths, exhale slowly, take a sip of some cold water, and im fine

As they say, Keep The Quit!

Hey guy..good to hear from ya..and good to hear you quit. I KNOW you've read all the advice/info before..but if you can make it through that first week or so..then it is relatively better down the road. How ya doing it..just cold turkey, patch, gum, inhaler?

In that case, it's really possible that it's just "one of those days" when you don't have your normal energy level..sort of like those days you got now and then when you were still smoking.

If you've got the energy to work out..then I'm not worried about ya!

Quitters never win.
C'mon.. I KID!! I KID!!

Hey is it the nicotine that fucks you up or all the bad shit in cigarettes that fuck you up?

I used to smoke, when I quit it was cold turkey and I never looked back. But what I want to know is.. will nicorette gum still give me a nicotine fix without all the lung gunk?

I'll tell you guys what's working for me.....

there's only one way I could ever hope to pull this off successfully:
I'm physically trapped in my home all day, all week long. I can walk out, but I got no wheels. The nearest store is around 2 miles away, and I simply won't walk that far even if my life depended on it. There are no smokes in the house, and I know because I've searched every inch of it 4 times, and gone through the garbage 6 times.

Now.... my girl comes home at night with the truck. But in order to prevent me from hauling ass to the store, I make sure I put enough vodka in me before she gets home. Not great for the liver, but it is the one rule I will never break.... I won't drive if I drink. Ever.

So..... that's why I chose a Monday morning to do this.... because I knew I'd be trapped here. But that leaves me here on Day 3 wanting to die. Hopefully I'll have a better grip on it before Saturday rolls in and I leave the house.

Centurion:
I'm chewing on those lozenge things right now, but honestly.... they don't do anything for me and I'm giving those up tomorrow.

Redshoe:
Read what I just said to Centurion, and then.... the reason for that is because the nicotine in these lozenges and the gum you're talking about (I have some of that too) is nowhere near the nicotine in cigarettes. It's a fairly good deception by those companies I might add..... people see it as a nicotine replacement... but it's really not. The dose is far lower.
To answer your question though..... yeah, you'll get a buzz..... but remember, nicotine is addictive, and these "Nicotine Replacements" are more expensive than cigarettes. LOL

thats why i went cold turkey. whats the point of buying those patches & lozenges and gum (and now they have an inhaler thats shaped like a cigerette LOL)...anyways...whats the point of quitting smoking if all im gonna do is keep feeding my body nicotene.

so i said fuck it.....i'll lock myself in my apartment....i know i'll go throw withdrawl symptons....and well....if you wanna know what happend, read my day by day blog on my experince LOL

I'm not sure I would have been able to stop without using the inhaler frankly.
I'd tried the patch, the gum etc..but it came down to changing my belief system from "I KNOW I should quit" to "I WANT to quit." Then with the inhaler, I found that a lot of the trap you're in from smoking is the ORAL pleasure you get from a cig. So, for me the inhaler was helpful, as I had SOMETHING in my mouth (insert fag joke here!) and I was inhaling nicotene IN THE MANNER I had before with a real cig. Even when I quit, I kept the holder (looks just like a cig holder) in my mouth instead of gum. Go shopping, go to the movies, whatever..kept that holder handy & in my mouth and sonofagun..over 5 years later I've not gone back or had the desire to ever smoke again.

quitting smoking is so ridiculously hard for some reason. i guess because i'm a high strung neurotic person to begin with, and repetive action helps calm me down a little. i need to give quitting a serious try though. i'm not getting any younger.
