No. If it focuses on its niche, customer service, and generating its own traffic, it can be big without depending on affiliates. Besides... sites that depend on affiliates to make it may be doing themselves a disservice if they rush into affiliate marketing without fully testing their own ability to convert and retain surfers.

That seems to be the truth...Cause there are some SHITTY sites making beaucoup dollars because they have mega traffic. It helps motivate me to know that if I can just throw more and more shit on the wall, more and more of it will actually stick. It's just a numbers game....Content comes in a close second though.

Sure affiliates are undoubtably valuable. If you have some whales ready to throw some traffic at the site and it converts and retains well you can make a lot of money. But you do not NEED affiliates to do it. Have your own traffic. Build and submit yourself. Buy spots, ect. Look at quiet for example.

EXACTLY. Besides... Affiliate marketing is not a slam dunk turnkey solution. There is the following dynamic: Say you have 100 webmasters sign up to your affiliate program. Only maybe 10 of those will actually send any traffic. Only a minority of the traffic converts. And only a minority of those affiliates that stick around will send any major traffic, if any. So you spend a TON of time trying to get affiliates AND/OR build up your system's ability to convert surfers and actively recruit BIG traffic players to give your site a taste test.

"additional" traffic, not necessarily more than they bring in themselves....

however, someone could probably sustain just fine without a regular affiliate program by simply buying tgp spots, running their own email collectors (4free type sites, free porn emails, etc.), buying their own ad words, etc.

where affiliate programs can help: if the program owner isn't good with SEO, buying TGP spots, etc. it is better for them to bring affiliates who can do that and do it the right way....just because a site has bought some Hun spots and some ad words on google, it doesn't mean they know what they are doing.

it depends on the site. a highly controversial site that can sustain high traffic via the media for example might not need affiliates to be "huge" and might actually dilute itself in the process if they did maintain an affiliate program.

if we are speaking in general, then responsible affiliates can only help a site grow "huge". irresponsible affiliates can also crush them.

What are the best ways to find affiliates?

I often get e-mails from webmasters asking me to join their partner program. I don't understand how they get away with e-mailing webmasters with this question. Basically this is just spamming, isn't it? It can be effective I guess.

any paysite owner that depends on affiliates to sell their site is an idiot...you should depend on yourself to sell the site first off, then maybe gather some affiliates

the one thing I ALWAYS do with my sites, is try and make more sales than my top affiliate, if my top affiliate is making 20 sales a day, i make 21...etc...you should ALWAYS stay ahead of people selling for you, and never depend on only them

This isn't always true, though always advisable that you don't depend on affiliates.
