IE is merely the frontend for Microsoft's HTML renderer/web libraries, which load at windows startup into memory. So, really, IE is just preloading itself with Windows, at the expense of memory. If you haven't tried an optimized Firefox build, now would be a good time to start.

Using FF half the time but pages do load slower, now I have read the new Netscape uses the same engine and performs better then FF.
Gone give Netscape a try soon.

Type in about:config in the address bar and change these settings by right-clicking on them:

browser.turbo.enabled = true

I installed Avant on my laptop and am actually pretty impressed. It's on the IE engine, so it supports Flash and all that flawlessly, but it has tabs and lots of other handy FF features. I still use FireFox on my main machine, though.
