.xxx Approved by ICANN

A much talked about topic in recently and many webmasters are wondering if and when .xxx willl be available... Bob Parson, president and founder of GoDaddy.com and speaker of the Domain Roundtable has confirmed it's acceptance in his blog.

.XXX has been approved.

A few days ago, ICANN -- the quasi-government corporation that oversees the internet?s naming and numbering system, approved the .XXX top level domain. .XXX will operate much like .COM does now -- meaning it will be a domain name people can type into their browsers to take them to a website -- but similar to the way .GOV is reserved for governmental organizations, .XXX will be reserved for pornographic or adult content websites.

Current expectations are that .XXX will be available for purchase and use by year?s end.

Read On...

What are your thoughts on it?

I don't think this is news... I think this is the same thing that we heard last week. ICANN has essentially accepted .XXX and now moves into the next round of talks with ICM. That does not mean, however, that this is a done deal. It may turn out that .XXX will be a reality, but until the entire process is complete and .XXX domain names go up for sale, there is still a chance that this thing will be defeated.

ICANN can makes up it's mind!
It's about time (Jeepers, it only took six-years, or so, for them to decide where they stand.)
Now, it will take another six or so years to put in to motion.

maybe it'd be also good to start some fund so that ppl can donate to oppose .xxx ?

i'd donate 100 bucks or so, but i'm sure there would be some players wiling to spend good $$$$ to oppose this idea..... unless all the players really support this new domain like ICM registry claims and like Lensman did

Now you know who to blame for .XXX

I called upon ICANN to approve .XXX.
In my keynote speech recently delivered at the annual Domain Roundtable Conference industry meeting in Seattle on May 25th, I called upon ICANN to approve the .XXX top level domain. I personally believe that out of all the new top level domains being approved, .XXX is one that makes a great deal of sense and will serve a useful purpose.

Still, the significance of .XXX names will grow in importance as new adult sites register their names to .XXX, and existing adult sites migrate away from .COM (and .other top level domains) to use .XXX exclusively. I suspect that it will take some sort of government intervention to require adult sites to use only .XXX extensions. It?s anybody?s guess when and if the government will take such action here."

Okay, here is an example:
Quote:

1). Say, for instance, that you have 123porn.com as a domain. A law is passed that all adult websites must change the extension to .xxx, but there is no guarantee that already secured and well established .com adult domains will receive the same domain .xxx. So before you know it, some goober has grabbed 123porn.xxx, and you're out of luck. . . .and business.

2). Also, there is the fact that people will now know exactly where to go to find adult material. Just type "whatever-your-pleasure".xxx, and you're in business. But that means that kids will know exactly where to look too. . .
Not saying that kids don't already know how to look for porn. . . but it's just a thought.
... to which I replied:
1). Merely a detail of a good plan - the governing bodies should have taken that into consideration and should have thought that through (of course, chances are they have not).
(Prior to any domain sale, verify whether or not a .com version is actively occupied, if yes, allow them the opportunity to acquire. I am not saying hold it forever, simply extend a holding or grace period. If the .com version is registered and not populated or 'live' too bad, so sad!)

2). Regarding censorship and/or protecting minors from viewing explicit images by 'accidentally' hitting a .xxx site: this problem is the easiest to fix as ALL '.xxx' can be block - simply block *.xxx
This will spawn a ton of NEW firewall and other security software, which I am positive will all include a .xxx feature

:2cents

Mindy... thanks for that link. I see that GoDaddy is excited and gearing to make a sh*tload of money with .XXX too....

Here's my 2 cents on .XXX

PROS

-- .XXX opens small avenues in protecting children... small. Such as parental services for email filters and browser add-ons.

-- .XXX identifies the domain as sexually explicit... if you don't want to see it... don't go to it. No complaints here.

-- .XXX will offer incredible type-in traffic from single word domains... (I forsee trademark legal disputes and expensive domain sales...) Let's see who has the fastest fingers... or the most inside connections.

CONS

-- .XXX allows the very possibility of unfair segregation of the adult industry to their right of free speech. Search engines, ISPs, traffic redirection, etc... which can easily block access. It clearly brands us for future acts against us.

-- .XXX hides behind the "protection of children" campaign... an intelligent conspiracy in disguise. (So does the new U.S.C. 2257 Amendments but we live here... so we need to comply to do business, whether it's fair or not.)

-- .XXX will offer more porn on the web. Not necessarily viewed as a bad thing for many adult webmasters... however doesn't help the campaign for "protection of children" which was what it was meant to do in the first place. Children will eventually look for porn, it's our duties as parents to be responsible on raising them - .XXX will only show them how to get it easier.

-- .XXX will be expensive to grease the palms of greedy individuals who have everything to gain by it. There is NO true interests in protecting children... if there were, I can think of a million other ways of doing this.

-- .XXX cannot be managed to assure that the websites are truly adult in nature.... what if someone registers religion.xxx or christianity.xxx even young.xxx More confusion, more uproar, more traffic whores, more nonsense.

-- .XXX creates the real possibility of forcing new adult site registrations to fall under this TLD... banning new .COM adult sites. Once again... branding us.

***************************

The problem is that although .XXX 'seemingly' makes sense with the 'perception' of helping to protect children from pornographic material will ONLY in fact allow dishonest and unfair lawmakers a strong leverage on controlling what happens to the industry's rights of speech and change the livelyhood of all adult webmasters.

I am generally a positive thinker and I normally look for the productive angle to everything... however I only see more CONS then PROS with this new TLD addition.

Like or not... it looks like it will be available soon and I know webmasters will be scrounging to get the best names possible maybe not realizing that it could possibly be bait to reel them in for the kill.

Only time will tell on how .XXX will affect our industry. The battle to protect our rights and freedom of speech will go on...

I simply know that I prefer not to live in FEAR (False Expectations Appear Real).... it will keep me from being as productive as I can be for today. Hoopla on topics like these can be a whirlwind of fear I wish not fall into.

Instead... I prepare today to live for tomorrow.

It's the weekend... so I will be going out to a party and having a couple of drinks... Who's with me?

It is a bad idea. AOL will be the first to block access to them for thier surfers. And then Yahoo, and then MSN. and so on.

The negatives far outweight the positives. The only ones it benefits are those selling them, and those with the connections to get the best ones.

And I suppose they would be decent for making se pages, but even that is shaky because its only a matter of time before google and yahoo block .xxx by default.

If a webmaster wants to develop an important new site on a .xxx they are an idiot.

As for established guys. Is someone with popularadultsite.com who spent the last 5 years building traffic, branding, etc, all of a sudden going to say, 'hey we are now known as popularadultsite.xxx'. hell no.
