The internet never sleeps, therefore hosting companies should have a back-up plan to deal with problems 24/7/365.

I would expect that at most, your system should be back up and running within a few hours.

All large data facilities have emergency generators and redundant systems. If you ensure that your host is located in a facility like this, you should expect to not be down for long at all.

In five years, I don't think my server has been down more than five times, and even then it was back online quickly.

I have even switched servers, due to upgrades etc, and there was no down time. Due to pre-planning the switchover was seamless.

10 hours is cool for a whole year 20 even depends on what happens routers die switches die other hardware does dies 100% uptime is nearly possible.

Reasonable all depends on the reason for the downtime and solutions they provided..

dns problems are usually avoidable by having duplicate copies on both servers.

If a person is buying 10k in advertising a day and making 100 dollars profit 12 hours downtime = $4500 lost = more than a month of lost revenue..

honestly a couple hours per year ought to be expected, maybe up to 5 or ten, but really depends how you handle your server and business. the host can be up and yet your server down, depends on how you work together.

I'd expect no more than an hour downtime a year... Great hosts have redundancy built in to their systems..

Hosts can promise you the world, but what happens when all the fiber lines get cut outside of the data center by a Mexican construction crew?

It happened to me..

Multiple geographically different fiber exits from buildings are pretty normal these days..

yes that was the only reason my server got back up fairly fast.. As they moved all the servers to another part of the data center that was controlled by AOL.

My point was hosts will promise the world but they can't control everything. Best bet is to just go with someone that is well known and has few complaints.
