Best horror movie of all time and why it is?

Interested in results, more interested in the why portions.

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things.
True meaning of horror film.....it was a horrible b-flick, lol.

"ALIEN" (the first pix)

In this film, R. Scott used the basic fear of everyone: fear of the dark. You didn't get to see the alien until the end of the flick. Prior to that, everyone disappeared "into the darkness." How many of you said "FUCK the Cat!!" when she went back for it? Man has always had a fear of the unknown and the dark. Ridley Scott just mixed the two.

Halloween - The opening scene driving up to the insane asylum was scary, then the movie slowed down and built up towards the last 20-30 minutes. Slow-walking Michael, the creepy soundtrack, it pushed all the righ buttons.

Jaws - The "scariness" hit you after you left the cinema and went for a dip in the ocean, neighbour's pool or even bathtub. Very good storytelling and a great film period.
