Army: Soldier Just Back From Iraq Kills Wife, Self

DENVER -- When Stephen Sherwood joined the Army a year and a half ago, a neighbor says he was the furthest thing from a military man you could imagine.

But when he came home on leave from Iraq last winter, neighbor Steve Johnson said the difference was dramatic -- he had bulked up and shaved his long hair.

Army spokeswoman Dee McNutt said Sherwood apparently shot and killed his wife, then himself Wednesday in their Fort Collins home. The deaths occurred just nine days after Sherwood returned from a nearly yearlong tour in Iraq.

Investigators haven't determined a motive and results of a planned autopsy haven't been released.

Johnson said Sherwood told him the couple were having problems, apparently because his wife was unhappy about their plans to move closer to Fort Carson, where he was stationed.

Johnson said Sherwood enlisted after his wife became pregnant, so they could get health insurance. The couple's 8-month-old child was in the care of a neighbor when the couple were killed.

that's assuming the gov ever actually gives them their college money... I know people who havent even gotten their regular enlistment pay let alone any "incentives" they were offered to join.

I just talked to my grandmother regarding my cousin who turned 21 in iraq.

he spent two years in middle east, he has come back and chosen not to re-enlist.

he was supposed to be a cook, they had him watching prisoners with gun in hand.

the lies they tell the soldiers are why these people go crazy.

the stats on suicides and homicides in the military say enough.

they train you to cook but tell you to kill.

its no surprise these people are simply wacked out of their fucking mind. my cousin was a 19 year old kid, sent him to iraq he came home fierce and a man.

not the same, and all done for college money.

doesnt matter that he's choosing to not re-enlist, the backdoor draft "stop-loss" bullshit can and most likely will send him back. also, ive read a lot on how the military handles any psychological problems that arise. and they have ONLY RECENTLY started to evaluate soldiers after a certain amount of time being home.

its like they forgot that anxiety and high tension areas create a mindset that these soldiers find very dofficult to adjust to civilian mode upon return.

soldiers often write about trying to seek help from doctors in the military but they are treated as problem cases and if you are evaluated wrong can lose your benefits and money - so many soldiers do not even report problems.

look it up this is serious stuff and anyone who knows someone with psychology background, this stuff all plays major part of how these people adjust upon return or lack of adjustment.

bad things can and will happen upon introduction back into civilian population, the most problems are the ones the military tries to hide and make their soldiers feel bad for even admitting.

that plus threaTEN of losing career and livelihood coupled with pressure of superiors leads to breakdowns.

believe it or not, soldiers freak out every day. you just dont hear about it.

there are thousands of articles abouthow the military has its doctors and agencies in place to keep soldiers in line. The threat of losing your career due to war-trauma is the biggest factor. In interviews conducted by soldiers and from soldiers, many MANY admitted to hiding their trauma for years

In every conflict to date the Government has failed to provide care for returning soldiers, according to the Mental Health Foundation. More Falklands veterans have committed suicide than were killed during the conflict. One in four homeless people are ex armed services personnel and many of the Gulf War veterans now suffer poor mental health. The Mental Health Foundation believes that many veterans are experiencing problems which are as yet undiagnosed. Veterans from the last Gulf War are still waiting for specialist treatment.

Dr Andrew McCulloch says, "The Government and the Ministry of Defence are failing to meet the needs of returning service men and women by relying on already overstretched NHS mental health services to pick up the pieces. They do little to ensure that service men and women are protected from trauma. During the Great War soldiers were executed for cowardice when they could have been suffering from PTSD. Today there is still a moral case for the Government to answer when it sends the military to fight its battles and then leaves soldiers to fend for themselves when they return."

"People suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder triggered by military conflict have needs that require specific services not available on the NHS. Evidence shows that veterans with a delayed diagnosis become more severely ill than those recognised soon after the initial experience. The Ministry of Defence refuses to take responsibility for the thousands of men and women who suffer from this real and debilitating illness. It needs to learn lessons from the US, where they provide early intervention readjustment counselling services and fund a National Centre for PTSD. Nothing like this exists for British troops. We have a first class army with third class mental health services."

anyone who's ever been to DC can attest to the fact that most of the homeless folk there are vietnam vets... well anyone who's taken the time to notice such things..
