The Contender is coming to ESPN in April! (+Rocky 6 News)
Hell yeah! Just saw the news on espn. (sorry, this is new to me if it has been posted already)
It's a 1 year contract with an option for 2 more years if it goes well. Both sly and sugar ray will still be on the show. Also going to be a rematch vs. peter manfrado (sp?) and the winner. PS: Sly is going to start filming rocky 6 on december 1st. ![]() |

This is very good news, indeed. We really got into the Contender. There was nothing but bad news out there about the future of the show as the debut season was wrapping up, but reading what you just posted just made my night.

Mark Burnett Productions, DreamWorks Television, and ESPN got together at the Staples Center on Thursday, August 18, to announce a three fight deal featuring fighters from "The Contender" Boxing series. It will again be a battle of East vs West and will feature a much anticipated rematch between contender champion Sergio Mora and Peter Manfredo Jr. The card will be a four bout card on October 15th from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and will feature Contender fighters from the first season. It will be televised live on ESPN, and will be the first of three Boxing specials featured on ESPN. Like the show, the fights will be five rounders, except for the title fight main event which will be seven rounds.
The main event will be a rematch of the finale, as Sergio Mora will defend his contender title against Peter Manfredo Jr., who will have to beat Mora in his hometown this time. The other three bouts should be very exciting also. Contender favorite Alfonso Gomez will take on Jeff Fraza in a welterweight bout. This fight has the makings of a very exciting bout, because both fighters like to fight going forward. Gomez was known for shocking Manfredo in the opening episode, and making it to the semifinals as a underdog. If you don't remember seeing much of Fraza, he was the guy who had to leave the show because of chicken pox, which allowed Manfredo to come back. Fraza is trained by Micky Ward. In another bout on this Contender card, fan favorites Jesse Brinkley and Anthony Bonsante will square off, both actually lost their last two fights on the show, but were very competitive nevertheless. The fight is actually a rematch, as Brinkley TKO'd Bonsante in their previous encounter. The other fight on the card will be Contender's Jonathan Reid taking on Miguel Espino. The October 15th card will be televised in a prime time spot on ESPN following college football, in hopes of a ratings boost for the next two shows, and eventually another season. It was also announced that the next season would start in April. Tickets will be available starting August 22 through Ticketmaster or the Staples Center Box office. On hand for the press conference were all the fighters participating on the card along with Sugar Ray Leonard and Sylvester Stallone. Sly had a lot to say in talking about the new partnership, "We've already had 45000 people register for ticket information, ESPN is the proper Cinergy for this." He then talked about the main event, "I told everyone that Sergio and Peter would have a rematch, and people seemed cynical about it. Now our boys will be fighting in the same arena as the likes of Oscar de la Hoya, Lennox Lewis, and Vitali Klitschko." He went on further to say that, "anyone who loved the show, show up, the reality TV part won't be there, it will just be Boxing." The fighters then took the stage and they all had a lot to say. Sergio Mora talked first about his rematch with Peter Manfredo Jr., "Me and Alfonso are in awe, I won a million dollars, but it doesn't feel like this. I feel truly privileged to be a part of this." He then talked about fighting at Staples, "I never thought that I would fight at Staples, I only live 2 miles from here, this is the Latin Snake's town and I'm not letting the title go back to Providence." He then talked about The Contender experience, "all these guys are wonderful, but this is for family so I gotta kick the crap out of him." The Pride of Providence was next up and he seemed very passionate about the rematch, but very respectful towards Mora. He talked about his rematch on October 15th, "I'd like to thank everyone including Sergio for giving me a rematch. I don't like to talk much, but I'll say this, you will see a different Peter Manfredo on October 15th, and you'll see just how bad I want it on October 15th." He elaborated further by saying, "This is make or break for me. I refuse to lose twice in a row. I proved that against Alfonso and I'll prove that against Sergio." Manfredo was then asked whether beating Mora would be more about the money or pride and he said, "It's about the pride, they call me 'The Pride of Providence." I'm fighting in his backyard, that loss killed me, and I want to get back to the undefeated Peter Manfredo. Jeff Fraza and Alfonso Gomez were a little less talkative, but still had some things on their mind. Fraza said about fighting Gomez," It's my turn to be the hero, I was the idiot already when I had to leave because of chicken pox, now I'm going to beat the hero of the show." Fraza also said he guaranteed his fight would be the fight of the night. Gomez joked with Fraza saying, "There's no excuses this time, no chicken pox this time. I grew up 6 miles from here and like Sergio said I'm in awe. I saw Jeff fight before the show in a hard 10 round fight, and I said if I ever got to fight this guy that it would be a tremendous fight." He also went on to say that this would be the fight of the night, and that he promised a victory for the west coast. The guys with the most to say about their fight were Jesse Brinkley and Anthony Bonsante. Brinkley talked about fighting this bout at 165 pounds, "I'm glad we're fighting art 165, I'm sick of dehydrating myself." Brinkley then kept it short and sweet when talking about the fight, "I'm looking to just knock him out quick, I got things to do, I know he's gonna run around, but I'm just going to knock him out, we're in the same boat having lost our last two fights, so this is make or break." Bonsante then started off by talking about their first encounter, "I felt I was winning the bout, but then Jesse landed a great uppercut that nearly decapitated me, I felt I could have went on, but what am I going to do? Kill the ref?" He then talked about what he would do different this time around," I'm not going to stand right in front of him, I'm going to move and box, but it will still be an exciting bout." His last words were, "Stinkley, you better be ready." October 15th will be the date, Staples Center will be the place, and ESPN will be where the fights can be seen as the contenders return on October 15th. http://www.braggingrightscorner.com/...der081905.html
