As much as I was dreading this day, because I knew it was coming, things could get worse.

Harper knows full well he's going to have to work with the other parties if he has any hope whatsoever of ever getting a majority government. A couple of things could happen in this scenario as I see it.

1. He could pull off a masterful balancing act, and when the next election rolls around if the country is going well, he'll get his majority.

2. The other parties refuse to work with him. Canadians don't want to go back to the polls anytime soon (Summer 2007 is a good guess), and if Canadians think that the other parties are somehow being self-serving by not working WITH Harper, they could again vote in a Conservative majority to give them a legitimate chance to govern.

Hopefully somewhere over the course of the next 18 months, he stumbles. He didn't at all in his campaign, and I'll give him credit for that. But if he does pull out some serious right wing agenda, we'll go back to a slim Liberal majority, or another Liberal minority next election.

The people of Canada sent a message to the Liberals tonight, but by the same token they sent Harper a message...tread very carefully.

"God Bless Canada"-Stephen Harper, election night 2006.

The good thing is that Harper is from Alberta and he is an economist. What I am wondering thoughhahaha8230; why do we need more Military? I mean, we canhahaha8217;t protect all our borders anyway, so why go throw money out the window? Not sure. Spend the money on policing, education, hospitalshahaha8230;

Because conservatives lack key evolutionary features, & believe having a 1,000,000 HS dropouts with MP5's is "neat"?

wasn;t the message sent to the liberals last election? paul martin did break off before taking over because him and a lot of others didn't approve of chretian near the end. chretian was at the helm for the sponsorship scandal and paul martin was left to clean up the mess.

Exactly, we don't expect much change in anything .. and besides, it was either Harper or Martin - more a question of the "lesser of 2 evils..."

In the USA at election time, you went back to the man who led you in to war on lies (among so many other dubious issues), we decided not to let our government get away with theirs.

Just pray the UK doesn't go conservative at the next election. I don't think it will but the one after that it might happen. After so many years people vote for change for the sake of change.
