Hosting Dilema

Currently I host at rackspace. I am looking at adding in a load balancer and anothr machine. Grand Total 2800.00 a month.

I am thinking maybe somewhere else might be good. Anyone have any reccomendations of a hosting company comparable to rackspace, but that isn't stuck in 99 pricing mode?

We can setup a load balanced solution for you in NY or in our Amsterdam datacenter, or you can load balance between the two datacenters. Hit me up on icq at 36837470 and I'll set you up at rates lower than whats quoted on our site at www.realitychecknetwork.com

Why not just delegate the sites resources in a cluster like a seperatge mysql server ect..

Better performance then a load balancer.

Well the balancer is to spread traffic over 2 webservers. I was told redhat balancers are junk.

Can I setup a cluster for webserving without a balancer? the sql server is already all on its own, and im not sure how a cluster can accomplish the webserving portion.

look into "round robin dns" (to load balance through dns, no failover though)

or LVS

Very interesting, I am reading round robin. The draw back is if a machine does go down, it still sends traffic to it?

Its like this

2 webservers
|
Sql server

My pricing from rackspace was for 3 webservers, sql server, and a loadbalancer for the webservers

seems like this is decent enough hack for a take over. dont know if it will work flawlessly but who knows.

Once again, good I asked GFY, I think that saved me like 1500 a month.

the non "hack" of this would be to use linux software named "heartbeat"

You know that even with that one expensive load balancer, that you still have a single point of failure? You also have another single point of failure with your one database server. ;)

If server1 is in the US, get server2 in another location, like Europe.

Round Robin and geo targetting should increase your delivery to surfers.

Look into LVS, we have a setup with 6 front end servers and 2 db servers that handles over 1500hps. But make sure you speak with a person who knows LVS and how to make it work properly. Hit me up we can taylor a solution for you.
