Major Cogent outage

Hi,

Location: Southern US
Description: Fiber cut between Houston and Tampa
Next Action: Vendor dispatch (ETA 1.5hrs to 2hrs) to determine exact location of break.
Estimated Time of Repair: TBA
Resolved Time: TBA

Location: North Eastern US
Description: Fiber cut between Philidelphia and DC.
Next Action: Isolating the source of the fiber cut.
Estimated Time of Repair: TBA
Resolved Time: TBA
Last Updated: 11/17/05 10:36 AM EST

This has caused the cogent network to be split in two, with no connectivity between the two parts. The smaller part is Washington DC/Ashburn VA, Tampa, FL, Atlanta GA, Miami FL.

Washington DC/Ashburn VA is the most important pop for cogent on the east coast, so anyone on the north east coast using cogent is going to be effected by this (higher latency as traffic is routed to chicago instead), and anyone in florida/georgia/ashburn/DC will have no reachability to the outside world at all.

The most obvious effect of this is that www.cogentco.com is totally unreachable.

This outage started at 9:40AM EST, and it is currently 11:37AM EST, so the outage time is 2 hours, and counting...

Level3 are a pathetic company for not breaking Cogent's spine and eating their voice box for lunch.

Getting rid of Cogent is as good for the Internet as nuking Russia and Israel and taking out 99% of scammers and pedos out there.

Yes I agree, getting rid of a provider that keeps bandwidth prices competitive and low is a great idea. Moron.

I'll never understand fools like you. Your kind are the same that pray for companies like CCBill to go under because you use Epoch. Look, I'll explain it to you so you can understand - We need as many billing companies, bandwidth providers, and legitimate businesses as possible. More companies in competition with each other means lowers prices for us - the webmaster.

Oh look, some TGP submitter trying to teach me

Go check your stats and fool yourself into think you're a whale affiliate, idgit

There is a reason TGP webmasters use Cogent, you make no money to afford anything better

TGP submitter? Please. Don't go making baseless accusations because you can't continue explaining how removing cogent from the Internet will solve the problem of cheaters and scammers.

Your argument had nothing to do with TGP submitters in the first place, but I'll quote you since you've forgotten.

So please, go ahead and explain how you think by narrowing the amount of providers you'll receive better pricing on your hosting, less people "cheating" as broad as the term may be, or any positive point you can think of.

Or just regress to an insult and call me a cheater if you can't think.

I didn't say removing Cogent removes scammers and scum from the Internet.

Cogent and their oversold lifeless services drag the health of the Internet down just like scammers and phishers.

Yes, yes, load up that hitbot, maybe you can get your trades to send you 100k uniques so maybe you can make 1 sale

Anyone putting mission critical sites on cogent deserves what they get, theres no arguement there. Look, I won't pretend to know hosting - this is a arguement of business. The low cost of cogent alternatives make hosting even more competitive imho, removing cogent would drive the price up - correct me if I'm wrong here.

Think about it this way, you remove the cheap cheap domain registars out there and you're back to paying $50 a domain.

You obviously want to piss about income, so put up or shut up. Assume for a minute I make 1 sale a week - show me you do any better.

Care to elaborate? I don't know that every hosting company would instantly raise their prices but personally I believe without the comparison of extremely cheap dedicated hosting they have no reason to lower them futher.

Again, I won't pretend to know everything about hosting, but are there not mixed bandwidth companies who use cogent as well as L3? When pulling their cheap cogent filler would they not be forced to charge more?

I see you've given up on the TGP income issue, pretty humbling.

Companies like Savvis will still have cheap bandwidth that's not as worthless as Cogent's.

PS. My troll energy is used up for the day. Next time learn not to feed the trolls.

Yeah I felt a disturbance in the force as if a million different fiber optic cables screamed then went to silence.

Very disturbing.
