Republicans hand democrats an early Xmas gift?

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20051118/D8DV3NHG7.html

Republicans agree with call for a vote on Iraq pullout.
2006 elections are around the corner and support for the war is eroding. Is this really a smooth move? It's either a brilliant CALL OUT of Democrats or playing into the hands of a unified Democrat referendum on the war which might pave the way for a Congressional reversion to the Dems in 2006.

Discuss.

I am not totally convinced that there will be a shift to the Dems in 06, but I will remain "cautiously optimistic" lol, whew I hate that phrase...

Because after the vote they can call the democrats voting for a pull out traitors and against the war on terror.
They will spin it to make democrats look like they support terrorism.

It's all about Spin. The scenario you described might still work since the erosion of support for the Iraq war is more aking to war weariness rather than palpable anger. However, it may still lead there if there's an Iraqi version of a Tet offensive (not very likely).

Even Ray Charles could see that one these days, it's amazing really that they even through that out there. I personally think it's the Republican's way of calling their bluff so to speak with all the recent 'pull out' chatter.

They're basically handing the Democrats a noose and seeing if they're willing to put it on and jump. Well that's only if you want to wager that the majority of the US wants us out, or to stay...that's the meeeelyooonnnnnnn dollar question.

The big issue will be whether the dems are dumb enough to actually nominate Hillary.

LOL. I can see Sean Hannity saying it with a warm smile--"The election has been cancelled. Have a nice day."

Seriously though, the USA is the LAST place I can think of slipping into authoritarianism/dictatorship. It's not in the mindset/culture of the people. I have always admired how the US/CANADA/AU/NZ managed to stay away from dictatorships/authoritarianism. I think it's the culture. Most other societies are prone to the "Big Man" complex but the US/CAN/AU/NZ focus more on INSTITUTIONS (e.g. Constitution, the idea that all are equal before the law, etc).

Yep, the conservatives are looking real smart calling a 2 time purple heart and bronze star winner a "coward" and trying to make him out to be a hardcore liberal.
This is a man who doesn't seek the limelight and is very middle of the road leaning towards conservative.

Nothing is beyond this administration when it comes to questioning them. How dare we even think that they might be wrong.

It's a typically childish maneuver by the conservatives.

No democrat has been calling for instant withdrawal. The Repubs have made a total fucking mess of the entire country, and the dems have been calling for a measured withdrawal with clear, tangible goals and timelines. With all the reasonableness and diplomacy of a kid on a basketball court threatening to take his ball and go home the conservatives are forcing a vote that we can't possibly approve.

It would serve them right if the impossible happened and the vote to totally withdraw was affirmed, let them stew in their own fucking mess. Of course they'll find a way to blame democrats in the long run and the republitard voters will buy it hook, line and sinker.

I am more and more convinced each day that conservative voters are truly ignorant of the world around them. They get all their news from O'Reilly Factor and Rush Limbaugh. "no spin" and "dittoheads".

I have noticed that the conservative spinners always pick the high ground names for their shows. The No Spin Zone... Fair and Balanced... News that matters... The real truth... Always playing on the "fact" that they are right. What they won't tell you is that is all opinion, spin and bullshit.

The republicans are imploding in a truly amazing way... it is like watching a building coming down... push a little more here, and the whole structure goes away.

Good riddence to bad garbage.

The dems should just shut down congress and filibuster every bill that the conservatives put thru.

This shit has gone to far. Time for a revolt of some sort.

The true tool is the one who can't see the difference between night and day or the Republican and Democrat parties. You know, the ones who never read a newspaper but in a desperate attempt to seem like they know something throw up their hands and say 'oh they're all the same!' when it's obvious to anyone with a cerebellum that they're NOT.

Once you realize you have no clue and look even dumber with your every attempt to seem oh so superior, you'll finally be smart enough to shut up and listen when someone who actually pays attention is speaking.

they arent the same. The republicans want to legislate with the bible as their guide where the democrats want to be the yin to their yang. Too bad for you the democrats have no backbone and dont really stand for anything other then the opposite of the republicans. If you side with everything the your selected party supports then you're an idiot and its obvious you in-fact have no opinion beyond whats fed to you. congrats

Well of course theres a night in day difference. But that doesn't make one better then the other.
Both sides only care about power right now. Neither side is willing to work together on any thing. Both want to shut down anything the other tries.

Both sides have taken drastic turns away from their roots to try to grab on to what they think America wants, but they're both so far out of touch.

It's just a big dick waving contest between to parties right now.

I can't deny your good taste in choosing who to quote, but you'd be more interesting if you could come up with something worth reading of your own.

yeah those crazy power mad democrats want to be all rational and balance the budget and shit, while the repubs want to institute a tightly controlled fundamentalist christian state with unlimited police powers.

Why even bother to vote?

It's all very simple. The "cut & run", surrender, and appeasement crowd doesn't want to go on record and later be held accountable for their irresponsible positions...... especially when election time comes around.

I wonder if many will even have the courage to vote at all, like Hillary for example.

It would be nice to have some sort of plan. Currently there is none except for 'as long as it takes.'

I'm just a surfer so what do i know? time to go back surfing the net and let the webmasters quote bullshit they heard form Al Franken on air america. ill look for "your" opinion piece tomorrow in the LA times. bye
So a democrat agrees with everything every other democrat does or says 100% of the time? wow I didn't know that! Throws everything in a whole new light lol

John Kerry is 10x the man George Bush is, and the conservatives don't need a negative light 'thrown' on them. They emanate it from within.

as opposed to the 'spend 200 billion and kill a few thousand americans for no reason' crowd.. I think I chose the right side.

funny cartoons Ronbotx, I'm assuming the best you can do is post cartoons that reflect the world as you would like it to be, where every democrat and reasonable republican is some sort of Chamberlain like figure begging Muslims for mercy, but fortunately for the rest of us that isn't the way things actually are.

John Kerry was a war hero, Bush was a deserter. Conservatives have traditionally been isolationists and wanted to sit out WWII. Why they suddenly decided to invade a country for no apparent reason is beyond me. The results of that invasion are a few thousand American soldiers dead, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead, and a few hundred billion spent out of our budget when we're currently running the biggest deficit in our national history.

You didn't see any dems bitching about attacking Afghanistan that I'm aware of, although I will say it's possible there may be one or two somewhere so bringer doesn't have to launch a google search to school me. You know why? Because Afghanistan attacked us. We had REASON to retaliate.

Tell me, you idiot, why are we in Iraq killing people, being killed and spending money we don't have?

Here comes the empty thought sloganeering "try to embarrass the democrat" types...

Guys, think past the end of your nose. Don't apply absurd absolutes to the situation.

Should we use the Bush pullout plan? That is pull out when the WMD are finally found?

Should we use the Cheney plan? Torture them until they tell us where the WMD are, then leave?

Should we use the Iraqi information Minister plan? "There are no american troops in Iraq"

Maybe a Jedi mind trick? "These are not the troops you seek"

Seriously don't be snarky dumbasses. You sound like O'rly and RUsh lameass when you post things like that, proof that you are not thinking for yourself, just reciting the pap that has been spoon fed into your Fox News Adled brains.

Alex

Would a Democratic House result in a speedier withdrawal or a better exit strategy?
