Wireless Security: A neccessity

How many of you have your wireless networks secure?

Do you realize people can access your computer and shared devices along with stealing your internet connection, if you arent setup?

I am asking because I have run into a few neighbors with unsecure networks. They seemed embarrased when approached about it but I made some spending money in one case.

Have a nice day

Head on over to the Netstumbler forums at www.netstumbler.org and ask audit and some of the regular people over there about it. Quite a lot of the mods over there have written books, work for the feds, etc so I'm sure they can answer your question.

Mine is now secure, after an incident with a neighbor. I did not mind them using it, as internet connections here are hard to come by. But.....

Secure here(as much as possible tho)

WPA +TSK(or PSK dunno)
Changed netwerk name
SSID broadcast OFF
MAC address filtering ON

And also my shared HDD is password protected. So when you enter the HDD, you still need a pass as well..

Not more I can do I think...

I have a question about wireless networks if anyone can answer it. Can the wireless router owner see that you're connected and using their connection? Can they see what you are doing? I don't think I'll be entering any bank information anytime soon on a wireless connection.

LOL I wasn't asking for any information, just posing a survey. Thanks anyway though.

It depends on the hardware/software the admin is using.

When logged into my Motorola router, I can see how many people and their netids that are obtaining IPs. If you enter bank info on a secure-site, the encryption is a bit higher but comparable to what you can set up at home. In other words, pretty dam safe.

I have a book called Hacking.Wireless.Networks.For.Dummies.Sep.2005.eBo ok.pdf and it can be found everywhere on the web. Protect your wireless network now.

If they really know what they are doing, most likely that information can be captured.

I happened to catch my neighbor because he was standing in the yar between the houses at night with a tablet pc or something. I would not have minded if he had not accused me of stealing the signal from soneone else a few months back.

I have several unsecured wireless systems around my home, how can I access their computer files? Can I see what they are looking at?

it's fun to drive around and find unsecure wireless networks, then enable security and setting a password.

I don't have it but that's only because anyone who's near enough to my house to pick up a signal, I'll be able to see.

Most routers only let you configure their settings if you are "hard-wired" into the router.

(Only the pcs with an ethernet connection to the router has access to the router control panel)
