Actually went shopping for a 42 plasma and found out that a "kickass" plasma will run you over 3000 canadian + a nice monthly cable bill to get HD channels.

Cheapest 42 that they have in toronto

I don't need HDTV as I will only need to watch DVDs on it
(does HDTV make DVDs better? or the exact same?)

It can make it look better or worse. Depends on the source. Gargabe in garbage out.

Get a decent upconverting DVD player and/or video processor.

I say wait for CES before you buy a TV. Only a week away

I think he thought you were referring to standard rear projection and wasn't familiar with lcd projection.

You can get an edtv one at that price and I've seen some that have incredible picture quality hardly distinguishable from the hd ones. Try looking here

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think DLP is a wiser choice. They have trade offs.

I almost went with DLP. A projector but too many issues with bulbs and the hassle of replacing bulbs....saw the Panasonic at a friends house..spent the same amount of money.

A projector DLP is nice if you have the setup and the patience.

I'm confused by your post, are you referring to a projector or to a dlp tv? The Panasonic lcd rear projection has bulbs also just like a dlp set.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....1171784 80088

Magnavox 42" Widescreen Plasma HDTV with DVI-HDCP and VGA Inputs
Model: 42MF230A/3

Yeah I like the new Sonys, but spent the last 4 months comparing all of them out there and went with the new Toshiba 1080i, the hd on it is incredible. Avsforum is a great place if you're willing to put in the time to research a particular model you are interested in.

Woudn't touch a Magnavox, you're not going to find a decent deal at best buy. Comparison shop at pricegrabber and buy online.

But for $1500, i would go LCD - probably a 37" Sharp Aquos - pretty decent quality...

I think Costco is putting those Verio 42" HDTVs on sale for something like $1699 either later this month or next month.
