adium is the best, and it does encrypted chat over all clients. might be os x only..

good question i've been having issues with trillian on and off. seems like it doesn't like MSN today.

Miranda - like Trillian Lite
Check out Miranda - http://www.miranda-im.org/ . It's free, open-source and takes a lot less memory than Trillian's now-bloated ass.

I use trillian and don't have any issues with it at all, trillian pro is the way to go.
wish they would do more updates tho
