Pictures from California of recent waves (pics)

Many of you already know that a storm pulled up on the west coast closer than usual storms this time of year. It sent record breaking swells to Southern California. I know pictures are starting to get passed around the web, thought I would throw in a few I took.

This is in Huntington Beach. The surf had actually backed down at dusk, but was still very aggressive.

Early morning barrels lit up the horizon. Before the sun rose, all you had was its sound; it was a very intimidating sound to say the least. The swells were coming in fast, almost every 5 seconds by my watch.

Many of the sets that came in were unsurfable, triple overhead, 15 foot plus, sending those in the line of fire diving for the ocean base for safety and so not to lose position and get caught inside the danger zone.

The distance for paddling out in Huntington Beach is already quite laborious, however, this break offered even more distance. The water temperature was in the 50s and the tides were ripping people every which way. Most of the surfers that paddled out got very disoriented and you could see them paddling various wrong directions. Only about 10 percent of those that attempted to get out were succesful, the remainder came back in breathing heavy, some of which requested the url of which I would post the images (hopefull I got something that made them look daring).

Some surfers found a little space in the middle of the waves hearts, not much room, but definitely a fast ride.

Great pics!
What most people do not know that is a ton of water movin around, it's mother nature at her very best. If you dont have respect for the ocean, you learn a quick lesson gettin tossed around in mountains of water.

What is so scary about waves like this, is you can loose your life so fast.

Buddies called from Northern Cal and told me that Ventura was so big, nobody was out, the only ones that would go out were being towed into the waves with jet skis.....amazing.

I agree with that. I paddled out with 12 to 15 footers once. The one I caught I thought I would never forget, however, the one I went down in I NEVER forgot.

great pics and commentary, pity about the color of the water...does it normally look like sewage or is that because of the storm?

Water color?

The basin of the ocean plays a large role as does clouds and general sun reflection. I don't think the inexistence of pollution would change all that.

Awesome pics Cory! I`m hoping to catch some waves tomorrow but down here there`s not much of a swell right now.At least not in my local beaches.

I was on Vista del Mar yesterday heading down to Manhattan Beach -- and the waves at Dockweiler were 6 ft or so, and they don't usually have any waves... El Porto was well over 6 ft in the middle of the tide change too. Not too many people out.
