do you shut your computer down at night or leave it on all the time?

which is better for it

I leave mine on all the time because I heard that when you reboot it's like a shock to the system.

I'm the opposite, I like to hear the fan whirring when I go to bed. If I shut down it becomes too quiet for me to sleep

I once read your pc might burn a 'something' when it is left on for too long. Is that a ferrytale? Sure looks like it when I read the replies here.

I no nothing about hardware, can you tell?

Not like you can turn off a light switch, or God forbid, flush the toilet, either.

I put tabs together for my college for nearly two years on a PPC7500 (that's right, 100mhz buddy). Now that's mind numbing!
Our trusty k6-2 300 is still chugging away beside me, running photoshop 6 and dreamweaver 4 all the while I hear it mumbling "I think I can, I think I can."

I have one P4 1.6 with 1024 of DDR that stays on 24/7 (cause its usually hosting a Quake III game)
One P4 1.6 that most my designing gets done on, so it is on pretty much 24/7 other than when Cubase decides its time for a re-boot.
And a 266 laptop that I almost never turn on. I heard it is not good to leave laptops on because they don't get the same airflow a tower does.

that's what I got and damn if this 'DELL' don't come up faster then a dog in heat!

But I still only reboot if I happen to load something that sticks a 'icon' in the sys tray that I dont want there...then I have to quickly run msconfig and make sure it doesn't load next time...

Windows leaks resources, especially memory like an incontinent bitch... no wonder so many of your computers be so dog slow.

There are some memory free up programs but don't know how good they are.

I use MAGNARAM for a ram boost and for less hard disk swapping etc..

I run a P200 ... YES, pentium 200 ... no PII or higher yet... I'm not needing to play Quake III or anything.. lol ...[shhhh.. works great for THEIF .. hehe].

Overclocked the system bus to 75MHZ so it's 225MHZ etc etc.... <b>STOP LOL'ing</b>... I'm getting to the point that'll make some of you bitches jealous

Run Win95b with OSR2 and USB and some patches to improve networking etc..

As a desktop I can run dvd music videos or any other kewl movie... <b>Interactive desktop bitches</b> ... If only windows did proper transparencies like Linux.

Btw Each windows version seems to require like DOUBLE the ram and 50% extra processing power to keep up to the same speed as the old systems.... Do you all seem to upgrade your OS, just to downgrade your computer systems speed... hmmm.

95' = Best at 64MB+
98' = Best at 128MB+
2000 versions = Best at 256MB+

<b>XP = WHAT A WASTE!!</b>

2000 Pro I think it was went into shops sporting 65,000 KNOWN by MS bugs. 32,000 were details that should've been improved, 32,000 real bugs,[rough figures, but it was about 65,000 and about 50% of each, and I got info from MS].... All versions of Windows be CRAP... But some function better in terms of overall performance and productivity. [Increase in version number doesn't make for increase in productivity]

Ok I have a P200 I use most times for work, 64MB EDO ram and some IBM 13.5GB 7200 RPM Deskstars, Acer 4x4x36 cd burner and an Actima 12x40 DVD player... 4MB Sis 6326,(I think the number is)... STOP LOL'ing again.. LOL

And my motherboard, cpu, ram.. And I think something else I purchased with it was just $50 US,[$110 Australian] some 5+ years ago now roughly. [Had no need to upgrade em']

OK... HERE GOES.

20+ Netscapes,(not including downloads x4+ often), Borland Delphi4 Profesional and Borland C++ Builder4 Profesional running, a few SSH and FTP sessions into my hosting accounts, webpage editing software,(arachnophillia and the ulead compressors mostly) full screen music VIDEO dvd running as a destop most times, ICQ & msn - more leaky buggers,(my firewall kills their ads and their input/output sends of anything baring messages to and from my contacts.. hehe,[specially setup the rules myself]).

Have NEVER, that's NEVER made a coaster/frisbie with my burner... DAM... Have to use the new cdr's for that

POINT IS.... Windows SUCKS... You want speed you don't need upgrade.... Get a BETTER OS... Linux is pretty fly,(but is still unfortunately missing some stuff that keeps windows on a partition... DAM).

<font color="orange"><b>QUICKEST ways to speed up your windows system if you have to use one:</b></font>

<font color="aqua">If it doesn't blue screen within 48 hours... [you not working it hard enough.. lol] .. then PHYSICALLY shut it down... Don't just software SUSPEND... Leave it off till you need it again... If that be only 30 seconds then so be-it.... It WILL run FASTER & SMOOTHER.... You'll end up SAVING TIME, by the system being MORE RESPONSIVE... Even if you factor in you're stupid enough to still have a system with so much dumb ass startup crap that it takes 5+ minutes to boot in fully... [My Win95 Takes under 60 seconds].

Clean the fucking registry out of dead/broken entries.

Don't have ANYTHING load on startup that you don't require straight away. [It says it only shows in your taskbar as a monitor till clicked to start up a program... IT LIES... It STILL LEAKS & uses resources.]</font>

<font color="yellow">THE ONLY people that should be calling a computer under a PII slow for working in the adult industry are those attempting major video editing that requires a very strong cpu and fpu unit.

Everyone else is either with a system with too much crap on it... [windows included, lol]... or should be working more and playing them cpu/video-card intensive games much less... Don't forget windows leaks so reset frequently or GET MORE RAM .... [<font color="orange">BOTH BE BEST OPTION FOR INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY</font>]</font>

OH YEAH... I often have a tv window on my computer screen also or play video tapes through my computer...... Ahhh... What a life... Do ya work while watching tv/videos/dvds ... or just some REALLY Nasty mini video clips, while you pretend to justify it as just some more work in you need to trim another 1 second.. but where best to cut... guess will have to watch it a few more times... study study study... <font color="yellow">Dam this is a hard ... HARD... S******... Life.</font>

Later, RIPP

I am running Xp, and I must say it is by far the best Microshaft OS I have used yet. I tried Linux, but I do alot of audio editing and recording on my computers and alot of my audio programs freaked out when they saw Linux. Unfortunitly I was raised on PC and have tried to switch to Mac, but its like trying to learn to bat left handed. If the audio software companies would make more programs Linux compatible I would use my D: drive alot more. I tried Win2k Pro on my 1.6 and it crashed in less than a week. I have noticed more speed after my computer has been off for awhile, but I have 5 fans and I leave at least 1 side off at all times, so it runs fairly cool all the time (except when I game, my gForce2 Ultra get hotter then the herpes from a taiwanese whore).

Always on. The computer professionals recommend turning off your system daily in order for it to function properly. I've found it makes no difference.

If it gives me problems I usually just reboot, but it's on all the time.
