Why does it seem like most people think driving drunk is ok?

I will not drive even after one beer, but it often times shocks me how many people refuse to NOT drive home after drinking. I know when I was in college I looked down upon it, however I also wrote it off as college behavior. I am 30 now and not much has changed.

People generally find it acceptable in our culture.

I remember a couple of years back, some guy stumbled out of a bar and collapsed. He then found it in himself to get up and then proceeded into a parked car, started it up and drove away. I called the police and they were rude to me, they seemed put out as if I was calling to tell them someone called me a bad name.

What about valet stations? On any given night, you will see at least one person every 15 minutes come out and take their car after drinking all dinner long.

They just launched a new commercial saying "buzzed is still driving drunk," did they just figure out that people find it ok to have several drinks and still drive?

I did some stupid shit when I was younger that I'm not real proud of.

But nothing hits home like losing family to a drunk driver. My cousin and her two children 2 months, and 6 years were all killed on their way home from 4th of July festivities.

Ray her husband survived. The amazing thing is the hospital lost the blood sample of the driver so she plead guilty to avoid jail time and recieved 10 years probation.

She was also forced to pay restitution, and when she would be late on payments Ray would call her attorney, and then this bitches girlfriends would call Ray and say stuff like..."leave her alone, do you realize the kind of pain she's going through?"

Amazing they had the gall to say this to a man who lost his entire family.

I remember a time when it was perfectly okay to drive when hammered.

I also do not drive after having more than two drinks. You'll notice at most shows I'm not driving so I'll drink until..... I have problems walking. But never driving.

I used to be really stupid and didn't really give a fuck about the consequences of drinking and driving... then i watched my friend pass away infront of me in the hospital because of a drunk driver and it was a reality slap in the face...

I'm just lucky i didn't hurt anyone the times i DID drink a drive.. i'm also an idiot for doing it in the first place, but i wasn't too smart at 17

Yes, that is the reality. I never do it, never have done it, but I have always been in the minority by a far margin.

it's the same way as some drunk guys never admit that they are drunk, thus they think they can do some stuff in a normal way.

I've never driven drunk but if I do have to much to drink, I will wait a few hours to sober up or take a cab home. I'm a pretty good judge when it comes to how much I've had to drink.

Driving drunk is one of the most selfish, careless, and irresponsible things anyone could ever do. Drunk drivers don't only put their life at risk, but all the innocent people just trying to get from point A to point B. How could anyone do this? It's NEVER ok, under any circumstances. Never.

I think that if a person is caught driving drunk, they should lose their license FOREVER. If they kill someone, it should be murder charges. Not manslaughter, MURDER. It makes me sick to think about. I can't stand people who drive under the influence of either alcohol or any other mind altering drug.

BTW the biggest problem i see with people when they drink is they get stupid speeding where they should not be and things like that a few people crash at 100 mph and we all get fucked with new laws.

1-2 years ago here there was a story about a family who was driving home around christmas in a mini van some fucker t-bones them 3/4 kids are dead wife husband everyone in the hospital and the local cops in a news conferance on tv say the dad who lost most of his family should not have been drinking that nite his alcohol level was slightly over the limit.

there was nothing the father could have done to avoid the idiot that plowed into his minivan and the cops are on tv talking shit about hit.

Not saying you are an idiot (idiot) but every single person that has ever said this same shit to me drives like a moron while "buzzed". When will you figure out that your perception of how you drive is skewed because you are in fact buzzed? It's not a guess, it's been proven over and over and over again.

That's exactly what i do...usually just get a hotel room, take a cab or last resort I'll just sleep it off in my car. The limit here is .08 so i can drink a beer or 2 and drive but if i feel buzzed i wouldn't

I got a DWAI 2 years ago, and it totally changed my life.. I was drinking and driving from the age of 18 until 2 years ago when i was 34.

Jail was not even the worst part. I lost my license, lost my car for 8 months..
I had to count of other people to get me around and that sucked. I had to go to drunk classes for 3 months and had to go to a shrink.

But I gotta tell ya, i am glad it happend. If it didnt happen I would have probably hurt someone by now..

Its been 2 years and the most I will have is maybe 1 beer and drive. I just wont do it anymore, its not worth it..

Driving drunk is one of the dumbest thing to do IMO.
The cops don't really give a fuck either.

But honestly, If I were a cop, would I ? I sure as hell would like to be working on bigger cases then stupid drunk driving, and tickets.

Unfortunately, drunk driving is the norm. It's a shame that regular (sober) people have to watch out during the holidays and on weekends just because of how many idiots are out on the road.

There's a guy near me who blew a red light while driving drunk and hit 3 teen girls, killing them all. He only spent like 8 years in prison. The families of these girls didn't even know he got out when he did.

DUI is the number one cause of deaths on the road. These people need to do at least 6 months in jail mandatory on first offense. I'm also for colored license plates to identify them.

I think the laws are too strict in terms of what they consider drunk but that's only because of the small % of people who can't hold their liquor and act stupid. I have never had a dui and I always take cabs when I go out drinking. A few of my friends have and it has made it difficult for them to get jobs because of it.

There is a huge difference in my opinion between drunk driving and "buzzed" driving. I don't know if everyone would agree with me, but I think it is kind of indisputable. I mean, when you're totally ripped; you definitely shouldn't be driving. On the other hand, I think people that are driving with a slight buzz, or not even drunk at all should be able to drive home without worrying about getting a misdemeanor. The .08 zero tolerance rule is what I disagree with; it should be a little bit higher than that, or completely abolished.

Also, drunk driving is the 10th leading cause of traffic accidents in the United States and it is one of the only traffic violations that is a crime (misdemeanor). Speeding, the number 1 cause is a basic citation. Maybe speeding should be a misdemeanor too since it causes many more accidents than DUI.

IMO, drunk driving isn't OK, but neither is Speeding, talking on a cell phone, listening to loud music, or running red lights. It doesn't matter if someone died from a drunk driver, or a speed demon, the person is still dead no matter how you look at it. Why all the hate to drunk driving? Think about that.

I am all about the cabs. My girl and I will even take a cab to dinner because we know we are ordering a bottle of wine.

I enjoy the piece of mind and feel like I do my part.

More often than that, people who use to drink and drive tend to get all high and mighty at some point and act as if they have never driven under the influence. They like to start threads condemning an obvious problem while never admitting that they actually behaved in such a manner.

They are usually the worst offenders.

let those drunkards do whatever they want, if they want to die so be it. Just stay safe and don't drive if you are drunk.

I had a cousin who got crippled after a drink and drive related car accident. I was too traumatized by it that I swore I will never drink and drive

Just what I was thinking

I also believe driving while sleepy makes you just as impaired as drunk (I've done both)

zero alcohol here too.

Try Belgium, Im close to the border, they think its so normal there to drink n drive, pickup fastfood grab a beer, go to the supermarket grab a beer. If you tell them thats not ok, theyre like wtf, the legal % is higher there. Its part of the culture too.

Never will drink n drive. Period.
