if i want to colocate my server to a hosting company, does it have to be rack size or can it be a small tower size as well?

Personally I think you should go with a rackmount server. Desktop components are not made to be used 24/7/365, things like powersupplies, fans and cooling units are not made unlimited use. You might have luck but rackmount servers were build to be used 24/7, especially power supplies, fans and coolers are different from normal desktop component and thus last longer and perform better. If you want high quality servers at a very affordable price look for your nearest supermicro dealer. http://www.supermicro.com Also dell offers some great affordable rackmount servers ![]()

When it comes to colocation, you end up paying for the amount of vertical space used in a rack. Over the long term it is almost always best to go with a 1u or 2u rackmount server. Even a desktop sideways on a shelf will likely use 4x+ the space.

colocation rates are very cheap and we can fully manage your server. Nobody has a bigger network than we do.

There is no difference between tower and rackmount cases, except price.
Both have adequete cooling, both can have redundant power supplies or not, etc...We know what we are talking about, we run a facility with nearly 2000 servers, a good mix of both tower cases and rackmount cases, and we see performance of both kind. Each kind has junk cases and good cases, and they are not good cases just because it is "rackmount", and not junk cases just because they are "towers". The only consideration is the footprint (space each takes up) because some providers will only host rackmount servers. This is prevalent in carrier hotels, where space is a a premium. Otherwise, most providers these days do take towers as well as rackmounts, though some do charge more for towers (because they can). The only important things are adequete cooling and good power supply, which can come in tower or rackmount case formats... We happily accept towers for co-location: http://www.unrestricted.net/colocate.shtml . .

It really depends on the provider if they allow tower servers.
We can do both. |
