Perl experts: whois query question

Is there a perl command specifically for retrieving the registrant email from the whois record?

No, but check cpan for the module that darksoul told you about.

That module gets whois info for .com, .net, .org and . edu domains including "contact" info if available.

yes, but it doesn't make a difference between the registrant email and the other emails in the whois records (like [email protected]). Any solutions?

I'm sorry, but I still fail to see how a regex could tell me what the registrant email is and what a random email

There is no simple solution to what you are seeking because there is no standard Whois format for .com / .net domains - registars use varying formats.

On a related note, many registrars rate-limit queries - and some are very aggressive ... they'll block entire IP ranges and/or file automated complaints to the owner of the offending IP block(s).

Ron

p.s. don't expect much help because many people will assume you're planning to spam whois emails.

The VeriSign .com registry database only contains the list of active domains along with their respective name servers, etc.

.com / .net registry use a "thin" registry model - they don't store much beyond the basics required for a domain name to function ... the rest of the data, in particular the registrant, contacts, emails, etc is stored independently by the various registrars.

Supposedly, registrars are supposed to submit their Whois data to ICANN, but not sure how often that happens, or even if that actually happens in reality.

Ron
