How many of you are Expatriate ?

An expatriate (in abbreviated form expat) is someone temporarily or permanently in a country and culture other than that of their upbringing and/or legal residence. The word comes from the Latin ex (out of) and patria (country), and is sometimes misspelt as ex-patriot, due to its pronunciation.

I came to Budapest June 1 2004. Since them I have spent 80% of that time here. Only going back to the states a few times for about a total of 4 months.

This Expatriate thing is new to me and not sure were I fit in. I'm still paying taxes, have bank accounts and have a home in the states. So really I didn't think I would be called a Ex Pat however according to the above definetion I guess I am

I started traveling outside of the US when I was 18 ... spent a lot of time in Europe.

Then 1 year in Brazil.

Then I moved to Canada for 6 years.

Then I spent 2 years traveling around the US and now I live in Asia for 1 year and half.

I was born in the Philippines but spent 24 years in the US. I've lived in the Philippnes since 2003. I've filed for dual citizenship. I do see myself splitting my time increasingly between the US and PI

RAM, how're you getting along with the language? Back when I lived in Budapest almost nobody spoke any English at all. Which is really fucking surprising, considering the amount of tourists the city gets.

Cartagena is the city I enjoy the most. It's a beach city, has nightlife, great dining, lots of water activities and plenty of pretty chicas to attent to your every need.

It gets kind of humid there, always hot, and it's not as cheap as you think it would be (unless it's for coke or coffee)... but it's a great place to spend 4 - 6 months a year. Cartagena is a very romantic city filled with history.

I prefer the small mountain towns but they are WAY to sleepy to live there and the internet shuts off around 9pm in alot of them.

I forgot to add... If you can live in Brazil you can live in Colombia. Only difference is the police will fuck with you more in Colombia. Well, that and there are Guerrilla and Para Military groups that would love to kill or kidnap you. But other than that, it's about the same.

I'm not an expatriate but I'd love to fly over to Barcelona to meet some of you guys! (When the weather gets better, maybe in March or so...). Lived in Beijing for some time (months) and been to Barca a couple of times. Wish I could travel more, bit it's hard for me to leave my local friends.

Do something meaningfull with my time like move to a new country and learn the language?

Try not to be such a giant pussy and you'll be fine. The best way to learn the language is immersion. I know it because i've done it.

Here's a good trick many Americans already use. When somebody doesn't understand English, speak it louder and slower! You'll do just fine.

hehe. You will not have any problems in Cartagena. Just keep your passport on you in case your car gets pulled over at random. The cops are pretty laid back in this city.

It's mostly when you try to go from one city to another by land... or your driving in the mountains where there are guerrilla... or if your in a heavy drug trafficking area like Buenaventura.

PG,

I have read some of your posts about mexico. I think you said you live in Cancun or one of those coast cities.

I have thought many times about buying a house down in mexico, have been to vallarta alot and just love it.

Read there are some cities with alot of americans and canadians living there, retirees I suppose.

Sounds like Spain for British people. There are parts of Spain that almost have more British than Spanish people.

Yeah, the whole Benidorm area, as well as Torremolinos and the shittier places on the costa del sol are pretty infested.
EasyJet and RyanAir are contributing pretty hard to the coast getting trashed up.

Sure, there are british people with manners and money as well, but the vast majority are the tatooed up white trash.
