With all of the options for cars why...

With all of the options for cars why would someone buy a piece of poo like a Pontiac Sunfire or a Chevy Cavalier or a Dodge Neon?

I'm not knocking small or inexpensive cars, just the particularly crappy, uninteresting ones that have no record of reliabilty, safety, style or good resale value.

I have a friend. She could have bought herself a nice Honda Accord but with the money she buys some crappy Pontiac Sunfire.

Makes me wonder.

Those cars work well for high school and college students who don't have a ton of money.

American cars suck period. No matter what class you're looking at the cars from Germany and Japan are better.

I think nearly everyone missed my point, perhaps that's part of the problem.

Addressing misconceptions as I saw them.

1) Buying American helps the economy- I am not 100% sure the Sunfire is built in the US. I am sure that the Accord IS built in the US.

2) Not everyone wants to spend on large cars- Hey I'm not knocking small cars. A Honda Civic, A Toyota Corrolla and similar are excellent small cars. Far better in every aspect than something crappy like a GM Sunfire.

3)I should have pointed out that she was buying used. However, with her budget she should have had a comparably equpipped, similar year Honda Accord for her budget.

4) People can afford these cars. - For $10k you can afford a lot of different cars used.

I drive a German car that is made in America with primarily German parts.

I consider it to be more American than a Chrysler PT Cruiser that's built in Toluca Mexico.

My wife had a Pontiac Sunfire GTX - she smashed it up and we got rid of it in favour of two Pontiac Pursuits.

The Pursuit is basically a remodel of the Sunfire (same drivetrain, chassis).

She liked her Sunfire cuz it was:

1) affordable
2) sporty
3) good on gas
4) had a ballsy 2.2litre
5) good for haulin' the kids around town

Everyone has different personal reasons for buying whatever vehicle. People have different priorities. Family-oriented folks have different practicalities than single folks.

Putting someone down for their choice of cars they drive is superficial, shallow and based on ignorance of that person's requirements.

edit - and I forgot to add she got a sweet employee discount on both the Sunfire and Pursuits through the company she works for.

More power to you, If you're comfortable with your purchase then that's great.

I wasn't putting anyone down per ser, but when it comes down to it, price, safety, reliability, warranty, there are a lot better options for the money.

A Honda Civic for example is a great little car, affordable, reliable, safe, efficient and it hold a great resale value.

You can't really make a comparison between the sunfire and a civic. Classwise yes, but the Civic seems to do everything better.

Again, this may just be my opinion, but it's also part of the sad reason why GM is in such bad shape.

Many Japanese cars are American built and of a good portion of American components. Still much better than GM cars and Fords.

Mercedes Builds the R, ML and soon the GL vehicles here.

BMW builds the X5's and probably others too that I'm not sure about.

somehow I see a relation between these two answer. since some people don't car much about cars, its just that they need one, they just buy whichever they find very convenient may it be according to the prize or the type/look of the car

It's their choice, otherwise known as free will. No one, not even the President, can contend with that.

Was it the 2.5 or the 3.5? The 3.5's are sweet, while the 2.5's are pos's.

And I have a 1993 nissan altima with just over 200k miles on original eng/trans. and it has never, not even once, broken down. And it actually runs great.
