VISTA: Microsoft plans to cripple computers running unlicensed copies of new OS

ouch... a lot of posters will dissapear

Quote:
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp.'s forthcoming Windows Vista will take much harsher steps to curtail piracy than previous versions of its operating system, including crippling the usefulness of computers found to be running unlicensed copies of the new software.

The world's largest software maker said Wednesday that people running a version of Windows Vista that it believes is pirated will initially be denied access to some of the most anticipated Vista features. That includes Windows Aero, an improved graphics technology.

If a legitimate copy is not bought within 30 days, the system will curtail functionality much further by restricting users to just the Web browser for an hour at a time, said Thomas Lindeman, Microsoft senior product manager.

That's hilarious.. and quite awesome. It's fully within their rights to do that.

I wouldn't be surprised if, instead of windows update saying "not a qualified original windows product", it actually said "Pirated copy, now make OS changes" and started shutting things down.

I have it for top sources that this pic will be displayed:

Although it's within their rights to do so, why do I get the feeling there will still be lawsuits when they start flipping switches?

It will be cracked so ultimately the only people it affects are LEGITIMATE purchasers. I've paid for my copy of Windows XP and I've had some troubles with activation that have affected my workflow. Can't wait for the new vers to start accusing me of piracy.

Call up MS and tell them you're an overclocker or some other bullshit that requires alot of rebuild/reinstalls and they'll give you a key that doesn't need activation. Just be prepared to sit on hold alot.

Yep. People that have licensed copies of WinXP are already complaining that they get the "This is a pirated copy of Windows" message. Imagine what this will do.

If they do,t hey only need to contact microsoft and get it sorted out... that sort of thing happens when someone has keygened a registration code the same and has already registered it before you get there.

If they have legit copies in their hands, they shouldn't tolerate the message.

Most people are stupid. Most people that get pirated copies are too stupid to know how to crack or get the crack. I have a friend that buys copies of DVD movies that some other guy rips from a real DVD. My friend wouldn't know the first thing baout how to rip a real DVD to make a copy he sure as hell wouldn't know how to crack this thing. Guy barely knows how to turn on his computer wihtout calling me for help. That is 98% of computer users.

Wow... I have three PC's ... all legit copies. Activating them about 8 or 9 times each so far (I'm a reinstall fiend!) ... NO activation problems ... ever.

would be the logical thing to do.. basiclly set the OS up with pre installed spyware. So IE would have adds built into it and so on. I bet they would make more money in the long run from advertisers.

Why? Windows makes Microsoft the richest software company in the known universe... give it away free? Maybe if it was not making them any cash. It wont happen. And NO one would buy an adware version.

Exactly.

But lets say they come up with a 100% secure solution to the piracy problem.
I think they're going to lose so much Windows users since they're other operating systems that can be used even by unexperienced users for free.
But the changes are probably around 0.0000001% that they will come up with something good.

Only if you try to attach to a copy of the so-dumb-workgroups-arent-supported copy of Vista.

You do have a 16 bit FTP server for that winsock, right?

If they force people to actually buy it, then lots of them will finally switch to a superior OS like OS X.

I guess they figured a 14 year old script kiddie was about to own them, so they thought up a preemptive strike/spin the bullshit.

They seem to do this with every new windows release. Puffing up saying they are going to disable the OS if its a pirated copy. They basically said the same thing with XP. We'll see what happens.

Ubuntu needs some major user-friendly upgrades especially in the driver areana first. I say Ubuntu and no other distro because it is the closest thing to a windows OS as you can get on a linux kernel, running gnome.

I agree with you on that. I even had to call them up twice after I reached a certain number of installs and still no problems, they were more than happy to give me a code to let it activate again.

"NO activation problems ... ever"? Aside from the fact that you had to prove to Microsoft that you have legitimate copies of Windows 27 times? LOL

That's what I call "activation problems"!

I'd be interested to know how much stuff like this actually saves them. 'Self build' PCs are just a teeny % of the total used so they are saving very little there. Just about every purchased PC comes with a licensed copy of windows so nothing gained there (other than pissing people off with activation problems when they have a genuine copy). So...

Is corporate theft really that huge? Small businesses will for the most part buy from people like Dell etc so will have a legal copy as do most larger businesses.

The biggest theft must come from places like China etc but will this measure suddenly increase revenues from countries like that?

All in all I can only seeing it serve to piss off legitimate owners and cost almost as much to 'police' as it saves from the odd pirate copy and a self-build PC.

My logic may well be flawed but please do not answer if by quoting how many stolen copies of software (be it windows or anything else) are in use. As with pirated music the presumption that everyone running a stolen copy would actually buy an original if they could not pirate is very flawed.

I don't see how running a pirated copy of windows gives Microsoft the right to hack your PC.

This is the same thing the RIAA tried to do. They tried to say they had the legal right to hack anyones computer system that was playing or downloading unlicensed music and install viruses etc, shut down their system.

"NO activation problems ... ever"? Aside from the fact that you had to prove to Microsoft that you have legitimate copies of Windows 27 times? LOL

That's what I call "activation problems"!
Really? Wow... it's like a couple of minutes. You gotta have some patience dude! :P

Activating my copy of windows actually makes me feel quite good Makes me feel like I've achieved something by paying :D

This is the same thing the RIAA tried to do. They tried to say they had the legal right to hack anyones computer system that was playing or downloading unlicensed music and install viruses etc, shut down their system.
Not the same at all ... Microsoft is talking about shutting parts of Windows out ... they make Windows. You licence a copy... the RIAA was talking about limiting based on MP3 files ... not part of the system... It's completely different... and something I am happy to agree with...

Is Bill Gates the world's biggest criminal? Isn't his whole empire build on an illegal monopoly? If he were, would it make sense to masquerade as the world's biggest philanthropist?

But the changes are probably around 0.0000001% that they will come up with something good.
How are they going to lose Windows users? First of most people buy computer with pre-installed OS which will be of course Vista. Those that currently have XP are not going to be disuaded from getting Vista. They could download Linux RIGHT now for FREE if they wanted too yet they rather pay $100 or more to upgrade to Vista, but somehow some activation code is going to make them switch?
