Attack of the Clones. Movie Review. (No Spoilers)
My father took me to see the original Star Wars movie in 1977. We were first in line for the very first showing in Orlando, FL. As an eight-year old kid, the movie had a rather profound effect on me. I ended up seeing that movie in the theaters 13 times.
Growing up watching the original Star Wars Trilogy, this whole picture of the Star Wars universe was in my head. There were always references to what had happened earlier. What had happened to Darth? How had the Empire had come into existence? What was Yoda like when he was younger? Attack of the Clones. What does an original Star Wars fan think of this movie? A Star Wars fan doesn't care about whether the dialogue is corny. A Star Wars fan doesn't care about whether an actor's performance was just right. The dialogue was corny in the original Trilogy. The acting in the original was quite stiff. Most fans didn't like Jar Jar in "The Phantom Menace". They didn't like the Ewoks back when "Return of the Jedi" debuted either. In fact, if it weren't for the Ewoks, "Return of the Jedi" might rank as the best of the original Trilogy; certainly it would be a lot better. What do Star Wars fans want to see? Star Wars fans want to see Jedi and Light Sabers. That's right. To a Star Wars fan, the sound alone of a light saber causes what can best be described as a religious feeling. "Attack of the Clones" is filled with them. Yoda Fighting? Hell, even the non Star Wars fans have said that was worth the price of admission. This film is brilliant cinematic history. I'll say it again. Brilliant cinematic history. This is the best special effects movie to date. Bar none. The scenery is breath-taking, especially the Rain Planet. There are thousands of CGI generated characters throughout the movie and they look real; not cartoonish. It is a testament to Lucas that he was able to produce a movie that was at the forefront of special effects both in 1977 and 2002. It will not be long before more movies are like this. CGI. CGI. CGI. Spiderman was an excellent movie. I saw it twice. People raved about it's special effects and the fluidity of the CGI. Attack of the Clones, though, is years ahead of Spiderman (and every other movie to date) in special effects. "Attack of the Clones" has so much more eye-candy than Spiderman that it is mind-numbing. The magic is all here. If you are not viewing this movie with breath-taking awe, you are not comparing it to other movies but maybe to some self-fabricated ideal. This is an unprecedented special effects extravaganza that begins to form a tight circle and binds the entire Star Wars universe together. "No, there is another."
