Helping elderly get on line? i need advice please

I have this nice old goat of a friend who just bought a new computer.

He has no idea how to even turn it on. My job, ...... should i choose to accept the mission, ...... is to get him up and running.

My question to you is...

Which I.P. should i get for him? I was thinking of something real easy like AOL?

I have always heard that AOL is mostly for steers & queers? but i don't really know?

My friend just plans on using his puter for surfing around and those AOL commericals on TV make it sound like just the ticket?

If I go with AOL, can i use IE for his browser??..... I hate netscape.

It really is important that i'm able to use IE.... I finally know my way around, if ya know what i mean.

Also..... anybody ever try that $9.99 a month Juno?

Thanks for any help!

With AOL you have to use their browser don't you? And since AOL owns Netscape you will be using a Netscape browser. If you need basic Internet Access just go with a local ISP. IMO

Just get AOL. It's designed for people like your friend.

Once youre connected you can minimize AOL and use IE to surf the web if you want.

aol is easy although i think it's an inherently evil service. just show your friend how to click the minimize button on that nasty aol browser after connection. then they can double-click the big, fat "e" on their desktop and surf like regular folk.

I teach in a local retirement home elderly the use of PC's. A lot of older people like the email and not a lot of spam. I don't teach them AOL I teach them the basics and the net.

However, the retirement center has a variety of AOL accounts they offer to their residents, so I do teach AOL.

I would suggest you teach him without the use of AOL, once he gets a bit better on the net he can go to AOL. Show him/her how to work outlook express. Trust me he will thank you for it.

Explain the difference between AOL and the whole wide world of the Internet, show him/her chatrooms for senior citizens. Local Church gatherings and stuff. They will enjoy that a lot more.

Show around for a local ISP. Maybe his phone company offers some deal, Internet access plus phone service. MCI ATT and Spring already have it.

Prepare yourself for many hours of explaining how to get the pictures of their grandkids on the background and as screensavers LOL

Make sure he's using Cogent. If not, switch him over.

Gosh damn, get him a normal dialup account and make Yahoo or something like it his homepage. It'll almost be like AOL, only he won't be stuck in a little closet in the Internet the way AOLers are.

I set up my grandmothers new puter a year or two ago. We bought her a cheap eMachine 900mhz, blahblah.... and a year with EV1 (everyones ineternet) its really fast where she was...anyways i would recomend staying away from AOL its PURE SHIT
also she had home XP and it didnt take me that long to get her to learn the basics, just save the dialup connection on the OS so all she has to do is hit connect. Also set her up with aim so she can talk with the grand kids
