idiots like these decide internet poicy?
Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) offers up this explanation for why he voted against net neutrality laws and offers up this amazing explanation of how the Internet works.
"There's one company now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to your house daily by delivery service. Okay. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order but you pay for that, right. But this service isn't going to go through the internet and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what you can order ten of them delivered to you and the delivery charge is free. Ten of them streaming across that internet and what happens to your own personal internet? I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially. So you want to talk about the consumer? Let's talk about you and me. We use this internet to communicate and we aren't using it for commercial purposes. We aren't earning anything by going on that internet. Now I'm not saying you have to or you want to discriminate against those people [...] The regulatory approach is wrong. Your approach is regulatory in the sense that it says "No one can charge anyone for massively invading this world of the internet". No, I'm not finished. I want people to understand my position, I'm not going to take a lot of time. [?] They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material. Now we have a separate Department of Defense internet now, did you know that? Do you know why? Because they have to have theirs delivered immediately. They can't afford getting delayed by other people. Now I think these people are arguing whether they should be able to dump all that stuff on the internet ought to consider if they should develop a system themselves. Maybe there is a place for a commercial net but it's not using what consumers use every day. It's not using the messaging service that is essential to small businesses, to our operation of families. The whole concept is that we should not go into this until someone shows that there is something that has been done that really is a violation of net neutrality that hits you and me." |

This is the exact reason why I?m terrified of our government. They are all old farts who don?t understand the technology that they govern. They make rules, regulations, and decisions based on not logic, but how things are explained to them? and I would wager that they are taught only the economic issue, and how it means more money to do it this way, blah blah blah. This is one of the main reasons I fear living in the southern areas in the USA. Police are real assholes here and can do pretty much what ever they like. You contest it and go to a judge and explain to him or her the situation, but since they don?t understand the technology they will pretty much ignore whatever you tell them and side with the popo. It?s ridiculous but hey, they have to die sometime right?

It would be at least reasonable to have folks involved in that scenario who have some clue about the net. Seriously doubt this guy has any - in that case he seriously needs a crash course of the background/implications. This kinda stuff is not exactly uncommon tho - same in a few countries. The end result is a total garbage of laws that just don't make sense until judges start trotting out a load of precedents. By that time, the "whatever law" is used for purposes that were never intended in the first instance. Dangerous stuff..

He's the same guy who built the "bridge to nowhere". For those unaware, it's a huge project that cost hundreds of millions and connected a small town. The problem is that the small town has like 15 people in it and that they could have bought each resident a private jet for less than the bridge cost (this isn't an exxageration, they literally could have).

I loved it when he compared streaming whole movies at a time with whole books at a time? man this guy is a Georgia peach all right:
?I don?t have to have that kind of speed they?re talking about in terms of the speeds that.. that they are going to put in the internet, but the people who are streaming through ten twelve movies at a time or a whole book at a time for..for..for..for uh eh consumers use those those those are not you and me, their not the consumers they are the providers!!!? This guy should run for president in 2008. Hell, why wait then, I'm sure he could come up with a reason why presidential elections held every 4 years are a bad idea and how supporting a 4 year election term is clearly a 2-tier system and we don't want a 2-tier system because 2-tier systems are bad so just to make sure let's bring in a 2-tier system

Where are Republicans from the boards to help defend why their party is supporting ISPs over website owners?

They should at least be smart enough to realize they don't know what they're talking about and hire a technology advisor or something.
Course, it almost sounds like some dumb shit that Bush would say. |

A member of the Senate for 37 years, Ted Stevens is Alaska's senior Senator. Stevens' tenure in the Senate makes him the fourth-most senior member among his colleagues, and first among Republicans. Stevens holds the position of Senate President Pro Tempore. He also is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which has oversight of the Departments of Commerce and Transportation. In addition, the Committee's broad jurisdiction covers issues including telecommunications, fisheries, oceans and maritime policy, the Coast Guard, aviation (including the Transportation Security Administration), rail, highway safety, global climate change, interstate commerce, space, science, technology, economic development, trade, tourism, consumer issues, product safety, and sports. As President Pro Tempore, Stevens presides over the Senate in the absence of the Vice President and is third in the line of succession for the Presidency, following the Vice President and the Speaker of the House. In addition, the President Pro Tempore is a member of the party leadership team. And this is why we need term limits... Not to protect the people of Alaska from this guy... But to protect the other 49 states from suffering as the seniority system hands him the best committee assignments, while new people with new ideas have to beg for time at 2 AM on CSPAN. |

I'm not a Democrat or Republican but I have to call out the conservatives on this board on this. Why do you never discuss issues like this when they come up that hurt the industry?
