I starting selling on eBay in 1997. We made quite a bit of money until about 2004. Then it seemed like the market got too saturated and margins went down. If you are selling a lot (we were doing over 100 auctions a week) you need auction software which can be pricey... overall we figured with eBay fees, PayPal fees, and auction software fees our costs were about 14%-18% per item. When you are usually working with 20%-30% profit margains it really doesn't workout.

I know people who still make money on eBay, but they are in small niche markets. We sold toys and collectibles, so Wal-Mart and Toy-R-Us put us out of business.

I know there are things that still make money on there, but be careful...

Good luck!

I think you can still make money if you specialize in items you know better or have better access to than most people but the times of easy money are gone

if you have a hook up for buying some wholesale stuff dirt cheap you can make some pretty good money. Personally, with eBays fees being more now it's not worth it unless you can really dedicate a lot of time to sell in mass quantities.

My auctions get about 1-2 views per listing these days, It's a complete joke..

If there's a ton of viewings, you can bet there's 5000000 others same item so you get screwed...

Ebay/paypal fee's and all that shit, plus the bullshit of shipping.. waste of time..

Ebay makes about $5 per auctiona nd you make 50 cents with risk of losing... No thanks ebay

Similar story to Spark, I started a small company to sell on ebay in late 98 or early 99... I made around 6k-8k a month typically for until late 2003, almost every item I got I bought from garage, got them for on pennies on the dollar. The highest profit (percentage wise) item I sold on eBay was a Sasha Doll (some European doll I guess), bought it at a garage sale for a quarter and sold it on eBay, netted around $200.00 profit, or something like 80000% profit lol. During 2003 though, profits got slimmer and slimmer really fast as more and more people around here found out about eBay. By 2004, it just wasn?t really worth my time, profit went from 6-8k to like 1k max? and same amount of work

I miss those old days.

I have in the past but I do not fuck around with small potato's any longer. I hear some people still make some coin, but it's not worth the haste anymore. Especially with all those shitheads who like to fuck your feedback constantly, or those who win and do not pay, etc.

you are few years too late, too much competition, margins are low, fees are high, really not worth the effort now a days, unless you have some great product to sell....

well duh... That goes for every online (and unless it's a grocery store every offline) market.
I still make some very decent cash from ebay and I work on my ebay thing 2 half days/week.

I agree the margin on ebay have really gone down the tubes. As well the US dollars really sucks for us exporters ( I live in canada)

Here's how I make money on ebay. I put an ad in the local pennysaver.
Wanted to Buy, Rolex, musical instruments, cameras, royal doulton, etc. Top cash paid Call 555-5555

I get a phone calls. Ask people for make and model of item they are selling ask a price. I then tell them I will call them back in 20min. I look up similar items on ebay and then call them back with counter offer. If they like offer I buy over the phone. They bring the items to me and I pay them. I repeat I negotiate 99% of my purchased items over the phone without even seeing the item. I guess I am know how to ask all the right questions because 99% of the time I pay the person exactly what was quoted on the phone.

Here's some of stuff I sold on ebay on 02 over a period of about 6 months.

buy $80,450
sell $159,325
gross $78,875 )
