When a soldier calls for air support what does this mean...

I hear it in movies all the time but I don't hear it clearly enough to understand what they are saying. A soldier calls for air support or artillery support to a location and says something like "fire for fex" or maybe "fire for effects" does anyone know the actual term?

Thanks

it's usually 'firing for effect'... when dealing with artillery... the person giving the position of the target can tell them if there off or not, and how to make the adjustments to hit the target correctly... at least that's what we did in bf1942 ;-) lmao

Was never in the military but fire for effects probably just means they don't have an exact location so just blast the shit out of the area in hopes to scare the enemy back/into retreat.

I just had a talk with somebody about that very subject. He is a sergent and calls in the coordinates to where the enemy is located.

He actually eyes it and estimates the distant and height, then does adjustments after the first strike from the artillary or helicopter.

Close enough, and last time I said it, it was still the same. But Horrywood has fucke it up in so many movies, they for them it means Fire at will.

"fire for effect"

That volume of fire delivered on a target to achieve the desired effect. Also called FFE

Yup, as a former Army Artillery officer I heard/said this many times. It's "Fire For Effect"/FFE----usually after firing a few rounds and adjustments (e.g.. left 20, add 200), the forward observer can call FFE when the next minor adjustment round is expected to actually hit the target; sometimes, while only one howitzer shoots adjustment, sometimes 2-6 guns will take the final quandrant and elevation settings from that howitzer and all available guns then FFE.

Bingo.

Calling in an airstrike is not an exact science. The person calling it in is usually guessing about distances, etc, and usually the first few shots are off. Once they have the target zeroed in they "fire for effect" meaning "blow the the back to the stone age".
