:stop EV1 & The PLANET Just Merged... Should I be worried?

Just read this interesting tidbit today.

EV1 and The Planet Announce Merger

Combination Creates Industry-leading Dedicated Hosting Company; Combined Company Will Continue to Deliver Industry-leading Client Experience

DALLAS, TX hahaha8212; Everyones Internet (EV1) and The Planet, two leading providers of dedicated hosting, announced today that they have merged.

Clients of both EV1 and The Planet will continue to enjoy the same industry-leading products and services they have come to expect. The combined entity will further develop both the EV1 and The Planet brands, supporting over 20,000 clients and 50,000 dedicated servers. This combination creates the largest dedicated hosting provider in the market, which has the scope, scale and financial strength to deliver superior service levels and innovative product offerings to existing and new clients.

The merger between EV1 and The Planet follows controlling investments recently made in each by GI Partners, a leading private equity firm with deep experience in technology infrastructure.

"The merger is exciting news for all stakeholders," said Robert Marsh, Headsurfer and founder of EV1. "It will be seamless from a client perspective and will result in a host of benefits for our clients."

"The opportunities created by this merger are extremely exciting, and we look forward to combining our resources for the benefit of our clients," commented Peter Pathos, founder of The Planet.

"We are very pleased to have this opportunity to invest in further building upon the strong foundations at EV1 and The Planet," said Howard Park, Managing Director of GI Partners. "Our aim is to provide the additional access to financial and other resources that will enable the combined company to continue growing profitably while further improving service levels, expanding product offerings, and enhancing the total client experience."

Also I posted this because Im wondering if prices will be going up seeing as they will have no real competition in the unmanaged market. Really big players that is. I kinda thought something was up when they were taking a long time to add new servers up for sale and had stopped selling for a while and then all the sudden early this month bam everythings available. Guess this is why. Kinda makes sense cause they are both in the same geographical area.

I honestly think it is a bad thing for EV1 customers and a good thing for The Planet customers. The Planet management had a horrible record of actually managing their business mostly due to their explosive growth, they even had an issue between management people and some of them left and formed a new company practically right next door.

EV1, on the other hand, is such a powerfully well managed company. Robert Marsh has been a businessman of all businessmen. He likes one-on-one talks with his own customers even though he's not required to talk to them or meet with them.

In the end, from what I hear, all the management staff will remain the same as well as their non-management staff. It's just that these two competitors are working under the same umbrella company.

This will of course lax competition a bit since these two companies were big rivals in the Texas area.

This good go two ways.

1. They can offer lower prices
2. With less competition, they can increase prices.

This kinda sucks..i've used both and they were really directly competing with each other. Theplanet would release some sweet new feature, and then ev1 would follow suit with something even better and vice versa, kinda dissapointed to know that that drive won't be there for them anymore.

I don't think they'll increase nor decrease their current prices short term. They'll most likely maintain their current prices. EV1 never drastically changed their prices in the 5 years I've worked with them although I've heard ThePlanet has been in financial trouble before and needed to change their prices.

Often when bigger compagnies merge, and almost own the monopoly of the market, there is, on long term, capitalization. Prices might stay the same but you will see lots of small services offered for free before starting to cost money and such...

I beg to differ about layeredtech, they've fucked up one too many times for my tastes.

They have been raising prices slowly all year at ev1. Look at their new website, it doesn't look like WalMart anymore it looks much more high end.

I think it opens up some room for competition. Both of them have been getting too big. EV1 is nothing like it was when it was called Rackshack.

Yeah what can i say.

Rackshack was the way to go. Im with layeredtech and thinking to move to LEASEWEB

10 mbit for 59 euro's and good servers. Thats service.

i heared good things about them the last months. but i had terrible things with those two.

The Planet blaimed me for not updating my creditcard ok maybe my fault but i was in egypt on holiday when my new creditcard did come. and i did't expect it that time.

And they said they mailed me 9 times to a email address 2 years old yeah. i updated my email in ORBIT!!! For the people who are with them.

UPDATING IN ORBIT ISN'T ENOUGH!!! So be warned.

The Planet are stupid Assholes for sure.

Their service has gone to shit actually since you bump this thread. I got few things hosted with them, before, when you asked the tech to do something, they fixed it in no time. Latelly, i contacted them 5 times to fix one damn thing, just to receive an answer "hire a server tech", so i had to fix it myself that required me several hours of research, bleh.
