Paxil withdrawal symptoms are often so serious that they discourage a person's effort to terminate treatment and even endanger their life and well being

Holy Shit! Thank God I don't need those legal drugs.

-------------------------------------------------

SSRI Discontinuation Syndrome also known as SSRI Withdrawal Syndrome or SSRI Cessation Syndrome, is a condition that can occur following the interruption or discontinuation of regular SSRI or SNRI usage (as well as many other types of Central Nervous System drugs, such as tricyclic antidepressants and MAOIs). The condition can begin between 24 hours to one week after discontinuation, depending on the half-life of the drug.

A number of possible symptoms can characterize SSRI discontinuation syndrome. They can include:

* Sleep disturbances- including insomnia, vivid dreaming, general fatigue, or mild pre-narcolepsy (a momentary feeling of being about to fall asleep).
* Gastrointestinal discomfort (such as diarrhea), or other bodily discomfort, such as headaches, nausea or lethargy.
* Movement disorders- including myoclonus, trembling, and difficulty walking.
* Mood disorders- including irritability, aggressive behaviour, mania, crying spells, depression/suicidal thoughts.
* Sensory abnormalities- including balance problems, dizziness, vertigo, light headedness, parasthesia, "shock-like" sensations in the brain and body (known as the "zaps"), tinnitus.

The condition may be avoided by either recommencing the original and or lesser dose of the SSRI, or slowly reducing (titrating) the dosage over several weeks or months. However, slowly reducing the dosage (even over 6 weeks) does not guarantee that a patient will not experience the discontinuation syndrome.

SSRIs are not addictive in the conventional medical use of the word (i.e. animals given free access to the drug do not actively seek it out and do not seek to increase the dose), but suddenly discontinuing their use is known to produce both somatic and psychological withdrawal symptoms, as described by researchers(Tamam & Ozpoyraz, 2002). Compared to the withdrawal symptoms of such drugs as opiates, alcohol, or cocaine, these reactions are quite different and frequently less significant, although the prescribing labels acknowledge the possibility of "intolerable" discontinuation reactions and some patients are never able to completely withdraw from SSRI drugs

In Europe, SSRI manufacturers are not permitted to promote their products as "non-habit forming"; in the U.S., this statement is used to promote SSRIs: "SSRIs meet the World Health Organization definition of 'addictive'.

A friends dad tried to lower the dosage and had a really rough time, so instead he kept the same dosage, but extended the length of time between dosages and it worked out better for him. For example, instead of one every 24 hours, do one ever 25 hours for a couple of days, then 26 hours and so on and so on. He said he did it that way, then after a bit he just forgot to take them and when he realised, it had been days since his last dose...so that was it for him.

LOL I love reading bullshit half-truths and myths. You can give a person a placebo (sugar pill) for two weeks and tell them it is some med, and ask them to document the side effects, and they'll come up with a list longer than that.

I have taken paxil for 3 years straight, then stopped. No biggie, felt like i maybe had a flu for a couple days. Boo fucking hoo.

Took it for 2 more years, then stopped. Felt like I had a flu for a few days. Boo fucking hoo.

Take it again now. No problems.

All times I stopped, the easiest way is tapering the dose, and if I wanted to taper slow enough, there would be ZERO side effects of quitting.

So funny to listen to interwebers rail on and on about how evil Paxil is. Drink 3 Mountain Dew's a day for 3 years, then quit, and you'll probably have as many side effects.

Yep, that will work basically just as well as splitting the pills into halves, then fourths, then eights, then slivers... lol.

But, what fun is any of that. It's much more fun to scream that the med is evil, is worse than heroin, the drug company should be shut down, bla bla bla

The sad thing is people ranting about it think they are doing some public service, and all they are really doing is probably causing some poor person who's life could have been saved or helped, to not take it because of half-truth exaggerations and lies.

Ummm THC, like booze IS a depresant. It slows down your system, brings you down basically. I wouldn't reccomend it for serious depression. Anxiety, however, is another story.

I read today that more Amercians are addicted to prescription medications than pot, cocaine, heroin, Meth, etc COMBINED.

I take a shitload of prescrips for my migraines. Nothing I'm happy about but I can't function with the pain. Had them since I was 13 and they are hormonal. Most aren't pain pills though. Triptans were the greatest thing ever invented for migraines. Every female on my maternal side of the family has had them.

I spent 6 weeks in a locked ward getting off that stuff - its not good at all.

Venlafaxine that I am on now is meant to be even worse - but I have decided Im on it for life.

Me too.. and me too about the violent dreams also. Some of the most fucked up shit you could possibly imagine. No leg cramps that I remember though.

I know a lot of people who are helped by Paxil. When I took Prozac for my migraines, within 10 days they made me DEPRESSED as hell. It made me really understand how people who are chemically depressed feel. Thankfully I knew what it was and knew to stop taking them immediately.

But it shows that different drugs react differently to different people. I can't tolerate compazine. It gives me panic attacks. But it helps a helluva lot of others so why bitch about it?

you are probably cutting it off too soon, lower it for a week. not lowering it a day at a time.

going through withdrawl sucks tho. often when i am out of town and forget to bring my medication, i feel like utter shit. like a crack addict needing his fix. hah.
