Does watering new grass during the day burn it?

I just got my grass installed a few days ago and got a permit to water it for 2weeks with no restrictions.

I was told that watering the grass during the day with the sun shining that I will do more damage than good.

Is this true?

Dob in your neighbours and all that jazz.

I'm pretty sure that is just a myth. The reason you should not water during the day is because the water will evaporate more quickly and therefore prove to be less beneficial.

If you water during the day you will just have to water it for longer to get the same results as watering when the sun is not beating down.

I should have spent more time searching before I started this thread.

"You can water your lawn at any time of the day if it is severely stressed, however, if you are merely maintaining your lawn, you should avoid late evening or middle day watering. Late evening watering can encourage the growth of fungus, while heat of the day watering can waste water. The best time of day for lawn watering is in the early morning, before the sun can scorch your landscape, giving it plenty of time to dry out before evening."

Not only that. The water drops on the grass will act as a magnifying glass and therefore burn it.

if its new grass you must try and keep it moist all through the day until its reaches about 2.5"- 3"'at which time you can give it its first cutting(at least 3")

Also, when you mow your lawn, don't leave the clippings on it.

Traps the heat in and kills your grass.

It's no myth, it doesn't harm it just doesn't do it any good. Reason is, the sun will evaporate the water. Also you shouldn't water at night either, this will promote disease and fungus. Water early in the morning 4:00 - 6:00am and always water long enough to feed the roots. Since you're trying to water a new lawn daily watering is ideal, but once it's established it's only necessary to water 3 times a week or so to keep it looking good.

Leaving the clippings on is great for your lawn, unless you don't mow often enough and the grass is tall in which case leaving the clippings on will damage it. Mow frequently and let the clippings fly, it's re-feeds the lawn each time and not as good as fertilizer but will make a tremendous difference is the color.

And...
after about 6 months, you need to try and get onto a once-per-week regime. This promotes deep root growth (growing to search for water) and will protect your grass a lot better during the hot Summer months. More than once a week and the roots stay close to the surface, since that's where the water is, and lends to dessication during hot spells. And disease.

The water drops can act as magnifying lenses causing damage to the grass, I read.

Go to any golf course and youll usually see them following the 4-6 in the morning rule - with deep south courses doing a second watering late in the day beofre the sun sets so that the water gets to the roots but doesnt stay on the leaves (evaporates) to cause fungus

depends on the weather, but assuming its hot and sunny you'll want the water to be absorbed during the peak heat. 4-6 am typcially. Later at night in some areas it will stay too soggy and bring on fungi, mushrooms and such (for 2 weeks, not really an issue though)... I'd just water well during the morning and maybe a smaller amount in the early evening if the free water is a big bonus there. Its cheap here.

lol

It doesn't do any damage, its just not very effective because of the evap. Water in the morning and evening / night as other people said
You can water during the day, but you have to water like 2x - 3x more

It is bad because the drops of the water on the grass are equal to the lense, that can burn it.

Water evaporates easily at midday, so it's quite impractical if you water plants during at that hour. It's better if you do that either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Water burns are highly unlikely.

New grass/sod keep moist until established, then water once per week. Reason behind this is that it promotes deep root growth and that makes for a healthier lawn. Frequent watering causes shallow roots and any real heat means a yellow lawn or lots of water.

Best time to water is early morning right before or during sun up. Water usage is typically in less demand at those times, is cheaper in many areas, and helps out.

Your lawn once established will require 1 inch of water per week. Best way to figure out the length to water is to place a few empty tuna cans or whatnot around the lawn and turn on the sprinklers. When the cans contain an inch check the clock and you will know how long to water each week. During dry months of course.

When you mow it, use a self mulching mower. This helps the lawn by recycling nutrients. Depending on grass types and your zone you may need to aerate and dethatch every so often. Then never cut more than a 3rd of the lawns total height during any one mow. If by chance it grew extra long, still only cut 1/3rd off and then the following week another and another until it is back to recommended growing height.

Fertilize end of winter early spring, and end of summer start of fall. Use a line spreader to avoid funny looking grass and avoid using a circular spreader.
