Its on right now, apparently some doctors at a hospital in NO during Katrina decided to "put down" some patients that they didnt feel could be evacuated from the hospital due to thier weight and/or medical conditions. One guy was in there for a urinary tract infection and was in a wheel chair but this doctor and two nurses gave him and at least four other patients lethal doses of drugs.

Talk about playing god...

They were supposedly on the 7th floor of the hospital, the flood didnt go THAT high, but they would have had problems though. Of course, they could have at least taken them to the roof or something and waited for an evac or something. I just cant imagine a doctor putting patients down like a vet puts down unwanted strays or something.

Apparently, the family is suing the hospital and the state AG has investigated the situation and turned it over to the DA, but the DA hasnt filed charges yet because for some reason there is an effort to brand these doctors as heros, so there is supposedly some big controversy over it because of that.

Probably so... but still... thats a pretty gutsy move... they didnt even consult with the family or anything... apparently they were put down and the familes werent even told until like two weeks later that thier family members "didnt make it" and then it, of course, wasnt volunteered why they didnt make it...

Doctors aren't allowed to play God. Sure, they can take people off life support and let nature take its course (with legal authorization), or they can stop treatment and just treat their pain instead, but they can't go around killing people.

If they really did this they should be charged with murder.

Sure, it's a horror story (tho don't have a clue of the details) when a doc seriously considers "putting down" anyone because of external problems and possible suffering. It's one very hard dilema - especially, if as you say, some of these folks were being treated for minor problems. Time will tell on them.

The major problem is much bigger and not only places medical staff in a situation of having to make decisons they should not be making - but also extends to further unnecessary deaths and suffering outside any hospital.

The support and logistical plans (if they ever existed outside fantasy world) were a massive failure and where the top members of the govt were totally aware of the N.O, situation, but made no efforts to address this as a matter of urgency at the time. The role of FEMA is such a fucking pathetic disgrace and, OK, only my

, but consider it just that criminal charges be laid against individuals in this organization and possibly extending outwards to others in govt who were directly responsible.

The current condition of N.O. area one year later is proof of no understanding of what a disaster area is or the effects a natural disaster can have - clueless. It is clear that, in the event of further disasters of this kind or in any deliberate attack - there is no chance whatsoever of competent govt support.

Basically making progress of a kind, but the rubble has still not been cleared - plenty tension, family breakups, a few suicides blah - but they got a visit from the guy in control when this fuckup recovery operation failed 12 months ago - so that should solve all problems.
