Well I worked as a management accountant in a hospital in NZ and it cost around $3500 per bed day where I was at....

After factoring in a margin and forex differences I'd say you be looking at paying about $4k - $5k.......... am I close?

If you think the price of ambulances and ICU is bad here, what would you think the cost of 3 heart surgeries, 2 brain surgeries and a gamma-knife surgery would come to... along with all the consults, tests, aftercare, out-patient treatment, etc?

I was in there last year for a cardioversion. I was inbetween insurance, and my 60 days had not passed yet. So I received a bill of $4k for the hospital, room, etc. And another $1200.00 for the cardiologist I guess.

I drove myself, so no bill there.

I was in there the better part of a day before they stopped fucking around and cardioverted me (I've had it done a dozen times prior). But ofcourse they had to try the pills, and wait. All the drugs, and wait. Blah blah. That's what I get for needing it when regular cardiologist is out of town. lol.

Depending on WHY you were in ICU. I'd guess $3-6k or there abouts.

Would anyone mind explaining to me why these things cost so much money? These prices are extortionate! What the hell is the markup on these costs?

Ambulance ride was $1400 - What the fuck! Realistically how much "should" that ride cost?

$600. Plus per day for private hospital room - Oh my god!

Pardon my ignorance, I'm from the UK and we have a free health care system (it sucks but it's free) so I'm pretty ignorant to the facts on US health system. Is the entire system privatized? Do they get away with these extortionate prices just because it's privatized and there is no other alternative?

I'm curious too, I've seen plenty of jokes about (USA) hospital emergency rooms not want to know you don't have health insurance... I certainly hope it's not true!

I had a quick 45 minute procedure done here in Australia a few years ago. The surgeon got $AUD600 (about $USD460) and the guy keeping me under got $AUD270 ($USD200). Pad that out to an hourly rate and you're looking at $USD613 and $USD266 per hour respectively. Not a bad take home pay...

In AU the basic public hospital system is free but there may be costs that are not covered. In my case, I had to partially pay the bill for the anaesthetist and my 2 night stay in hospital.

Ambulances are expensive here too, but you can buy membership which is basically insurance against unexpected bills. For a flat rate everything is covered, including helicopter trips (which can run into the thousands). I once came across a guy out cold in the middle of the road (on the tram tracks) and after a quick check called an ambulance. I thought he'd been hit by a car but it turns out he was probably just drunk, and got his bike caught in the tracks. Kinda felt sorry for him when I later found out how much the ride was going to cost!!!

Basically yes. The actual cost (to the hospitals) of many operations, because everyone in health care related business is inflating prices, is as much as ten times the cost in the UK. And then you have to add around 25% to cover the insurance company's "cut".

750,000 bankruptcies are declared every year in the US as a result of medical bills. Three-quarters of those people had medical coverage at least at the beginning of their treatment.

It always saddens me when people take out their anger on staff that can do nothing about the problem i.e. the costs

Depending on the duration or recovery time in the hospital - probably over a million dollars - I don't know if you were talking about yourself but I'd sure be with a smile on my face every morning when I'd wake.

no, not really

the first ride from the accident scene to the hospital was only $450

at the hospital I was stabilized and injuries were treated and evaluated, they decided that with the head injury and ruptured spleen that I was too critical for thier facility, so they transported me via ambulance to a much larger hospital an hour and a half away in Cedar City, UT. And that ambulance ride with fully staffed ambulance for a critical patient instead of just baseline paramedics was $2250. I'm still alive so I'm not bitching about it at all, besides I have real good medical insurance.

Good guess and very close: near 7 figures.

I'm not entirely sure I understood the rest of your comment correctly, but I got the impression you are assuming that because operations take place they are successful. Unfortunately that is not always the case.
