Alternative domain name spellings...

Let's talk about alternative domain name spellings, and their effectiveness, worth etc...

Example Words:
COOL vs KEWL
HOT vs HAWT
PORN vs PRON
SEX vs SECKS

What are your thoughts on the worth of the alternative spellings, their effectiveness and their general usefulness in domain names.

Do you register alternative spellings?
Have you developed sites on such domains?
Have you bought / flipped any alt spelling domains?
How do they compare in value?

very annoying. Pron is not that bad but the rest are just horrible and get on my nerves due to the shear fact of trying too hard to be "edgy".

I agree with this. However, something that's been on my mind lately about these alt words... The people who use them are currently between the ages of 16 to 25ish, most of which are of the college age bracket, or soon to be. Many of whom possess credit cards, and look at porn.

I blame the MySpace generation for these travesties to our grammatical destruction, but the fact remains... Google has alt spelling results just as it has standard spellings, and someone who actually uses the alt versions, would identify with a site that speaks their language, which might lead one to believe that they are an easier sale on such a domain.

Just some thoughts on the topic.

I also blame Hooked On Phonics for these rediculous spellings.

yes true, and the shear fact that it would be easy to remember the word too so that would be another + for using them. i just feel this fad was 2 years ago and now aren't considered "cool" anymore even to the kids.

i mean don't get me wrong. replacing 1 letter like skillz is ok but it starts getting stupid and 'desperate to be cool' when 2-3 letters get replaced in a 4 letter word

I agree with the lameness of the whole thing, I'm more interested in if they are effective in domain names.
