pc doesn't start up anymore

yesterday i shut the pc down, i just wanted to put it on again today but it was still on - a program wasnt closed properly so it stood on all night with that 'you wish to end this program' prompt.
Sometimes this happens, and i just hit 'end program' and the computer shuts down, but now it just stayed on with just the desktop wallpaper on the screen. So i pushed reset and it doesn't do anything anymore... wtf?
The light of the pc goes on, but it doesnt load like it always does when starting up, and the monitor doesnt react anymore it stays black. It's my work pc, i need to get it running asap

could be a virus like what happened to me last week...Now you must do what I had to do which is run around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to find who is open the earliest that can fix your computer..

Good luck.

Pull the RAM out and reseat it. Do the same with the processor. If that doesn't work pull the drive out and slave it to another machine and copy your files.

Does it POST when you turn it on? (make beepy noises)

Easiest thing to do is reinstall the OS. Assuming you have back ups of course.

That’s not good… potentially it’s the motherboard. No audible PC beep is a bad sign. If you have a spare video card (or onboard video) to try to make sure it’s not that, then go on to RAM if you have two sticks, try one at a time or borrow a stick from a friend. It’s doubtful it’s the PSU, but that’s a possibility, but it sounds like its getting power but it’s just not doing anything after you cut on the computer.

With this limited information, I’d have to say motherboard atm.

Also occasionally this has been known to happen w/bad PS/2 keyboard, you may wanna try another keyboard if possible or unplug it to see if computer will turn on, may wanna unplug mouse as well just for the fuck of it.

try reinstalling xp first if thats the os you are running.
try to do a repair install so you don't lose your data.
If it is just the os it will tell you if it can do a repair install or not.

I just went through somehting very similar.
Ended up having a couple of corrupt xp files
I could not do a repair install and ended up having to do a complete reinstall, losing any data I had not backed up.

I gather that when he turns on the computer, nothing happens at all. I.e. black monitor screen as you would normally see when the computer is turned off, so he is unable to reinstall XP. If it were an OS/software problem (which it doesn't sound like), just unplug the HD to see if you can actually get the computer to display any bios information, etc.

If it doesn't POST, it's a hardware error. I would do the following:
  1. Remove everthing from the mainboard, except CPU and PSU. If it gives a beep, proceed with step 5
  2. try another PSU.
  3. try another CPU.
  4. try another mainboard.
  5. Connect components until you find the one which causes the trouble. Blow in every connector to clean it from dust. Start with the memory.
  6. Keyboard
  7. Graphic card
  8. Harddrive
  9. the rest, one by one
  10. If you've put back everything and it works again, it was maybe a loose connection.
  11. Make a backup and keep it up to date. Will save your life.
Hope that helps

Wow, first I?ve heard of it being a printer! But yeah, if there?s not a good ground being made it could cause that (the problem I noted about the PS/2 keyboards doing something similar is uncommon but happens occasionally). Out of my own retarded curiosity, is it a USB printer or a Parallel printer? And then is it a laser printer or an inkjet or dye sublimation?

It sounds like you've got a power source issue. Might be a good idea to replace it or have someone do it for you. Inexpensive and pretty easy.

Thanks I still use an ancient Epson EPL-8000 laser printer, the thing weighs a fucking hundred pounds and doesn't print high quality, but I've *never* had to replace anything on it, not even a new toner LOL. This thing is like from 1993, talk about a fucking sweet piece of tech.
