True, but why? It's an American tradition, while being cool I see no reason to officialy recognize it. Just go along like others and do it anyway.

I know what you mean, but it just looks like so much fun, it would be nice for Australia to fully embrace it, great for the kids.

Being an American living in Australia for over 5 years now I have to agree with you. We have our Halloween in October, then Thanksgiving in November, Christmas in December then New years. 3 months of holidays kicks ass.

But Australia still does rock.. love it here

Not missing much anymore batts.

The US media has basically scared the living crap out of every parent with a bunch of myths and downright lies. Well scared them just enough to say fuck the kids and hijack the damn holiday for themselves and make the kiddies stay home.

It used to be my favorite holiday. I liked going out of the way to have the best treats for the kids and putting up themes for them etc. Now I am lucky to get 10 kids at my door. Really sad since some of my most fond memories were about this holiday.

Until of course the reports of pins in candy, razor blades, etc. Hospitals offering free x-rays of candy and what not. I figured it was just a way for your parents to sort the candy and take what they wanted. I never heard of anyone finding anything and little did I know they didn't want just my candy, they wanted the whole damn holiday.

Oh fucking well, I will again decorate and give the kids that do show more candy then they ever would get yet again this year. Stopped buying the small stuff couple years back. Now they all get real candy and lots of it.

Halloween is a pagan event , pagans do celebrate it over here but its held in april as that is the season , halloween being the time when the borders between the 2 worlds at the thinnest , but as with everything it gets exploited by the shops turned into a money grabbing spin

I don't even really do anything on the actual holiday anymore but one of my buddies has a party every year the Saturday before so I just go to that. I still get candy for the kids on Halloween but there's definitely less kids every year.

Turkey is like thanksgiving dude. Christmas is like ham, goose, or prime rib.

the UK doesn't really do Halloween either. It is getting slightly better but it just isn't something they do and when they do then do it half ass. I don't actually like seeings kids trick or treating over here because they don't understand the safety aspects (they see it on American movies and want to do it) and the old people whose doors they knock on aren't used to it and just see it as a bunch of kids begging for candy.

That said, the guy fawkes 'penny for a guy' thing is teaching kids to beg on street corners but apparently isn't seen that way

Anyway, I have spent the last four Halloween nights at the faux goth pub I go to on a regular basis. They always try to make it fun.

I don't know what fucking slum these other guys are living in but when I took my kid out for Halloween when I was in the states all the neighborhood was out, tons of kids and adults in full costume and after a few hours of trick or treating we both came home with two back packs full of candy.

and, uh, no razor blades or poison... give me a fucking break I think this guy is living is la la terrorist land or something

the razor thing came out of a couple incidents in the late 70's and early 80's but from there became folklore for a generation afterwards. I wouldn't let a kid of mine have upwrapped food either but there is nothing wrong with ending the night at a party thrown at a hospital where they xray things. This really a case of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch. More of a factor is that people don't know their neighbors as much anymore.

Well stated and I agree. It was a fun, harmless holiday, where kids could just be kids.

Now, the schools and certain groups (the media only sensationalised it) have sucked the life out of this..everyone's offended now in the States...

..and no one gets to dress up as ghosts and goblins and witches or anything other than cartoon characters and benign beings....it's just boring now.

Hell, in schools, now they call it Harvest Day or Autumn whatever....

I used to love seeing the kids come to the door, bloody and scary looking. If I see one more Power Ranger, I'm going to scream.

It's become so sanitary and 'correct', it's no fun anymore.
