The main reason I became a Nikon user was because it had signifcantly better x-sync times compared to Canon when I started out 20 years ago shooting indoor sports. I was always so happy to have much sharper images than my competitors that I never ever thought about getting a slow Canon.
Just like the D70. It has a x-sync of 1/500 sec. Great for fill in flashes on the beach during daytime.

There was a thread about this earlier today:
http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=665759 Most pros probably don't use the D80 shown in your first picture for a first camera. While being a great camera it is made of plastic. The D200 has a more rugged metal mechanic, shoots @ 5fps and has 1/250 flash sync, so most pros will probably go for a D200, a D2Xs (pricey!!), or probably even wait for a new pro camera that Nikon may unveil soon. If money is an issue -and with digicams that will be obsolete in a couple of years it probably is for most of us- I'd still pick the D80 over (almost) any Canon for the simple fact that it gives you access to Nikon's unsurpassed lenses. Like the new 18-200 that is relatively cheap and makes a whole bag of expensive lenses obsolete. In the end it's the lens that counts, not so much the camera. Also, good lenses keep their value while digital cameras are worth shit after 2 years, so it's always a good idea to invest a little more in a lens.

I shoot with the Canon 1D Mark II cameras and couldn't be happier
![]() For me...Canon does some magical stuff with skin tones. Maybe it's the algorithms or the glass - I haven't yet figured it out. All I know is I love it and will be a Canon man for life ![]() |

I have said this before and I will say it again
IF you shoot mostly indoors and you treat your equipment well either is a fine camera. If you shoot outdoors and or in harsh environments the Nikon is the ONLY way to go. I once shot in red rock canyon (thats the desert) with a sony vx1000, a canon XL1, a Nikon D100 and a comparable Canon digital slr D10 I think? BOTH the Canon cameras got sand in them from the wind and had to be sent to canon for repair. the nikon and the sony had no problems THATS were Nikon Cameras shine and thats why they are the choice of photojournalists world wide

I've used both. Started life with Nikon, have Canon now...
Really, it makes no difference to me. If someone replaced my Canon stuff with Nikon today, I'd just quickly learn where the buttons are to change ISO, shutter, and f-stop. You'll be happy any way you go... It's what you do with it, that makes it worth it.

I'll be fair here as well, and say both are great cameras. I also agree it is the glass that counts, and not the camera, and the application of your photographs is very important. I would not recommend the same camera to a sports shooter as I would a wedding photographer, nor would I recommend the same camera to a location porn photographer as I would a studio fashion photographer.
That being said, my prefernce is Canon ALL THE WAY. Their leaps in digital technology have been two steps ahead of Nikon since the beginning; bigger chips, more megapixels, better features, and cleaner bodies for less money than Nikon. I also like that I can control my Canon very intuitively with ONE HAND; holding Nikon I feel like I have to play a fucking trumpet to change any settings. Also, just as an aside, I went to one of the top photography schools in the world, and most (maybe 70%) of the future professionals there switched their entire system from Nikon to Canon when they went Digital. Either system is fine. I have my prefernce. It is about how the camera feels in your hand; how natural it feels to use it. It sounds stupid, but the first time I felt a Nikon, nothing happened. The first time I held a Canon, I swear I felt a little magic happen. ![]() |

I have a canon and my photography teacher has a canon, we were talking about lens. I was saying my e-10 was slow as shit but the glass was amazing and nothing I have for my canon comes close. Then he said for lens quality its Olympus, then nikon and last canon. I wish I knew that before I bought into the canon lens system.

Well I use Nikons - I have an F5, N90s and a new F100 - a SB28 flash and a nice supply of Nikor lens - I am looking at the D2X or D200 myself - I think the main reason for me staying Nikon is I won't have to buy more lens or a flash if I stay with Nikons hi end digitals - digital price has kept me in film for work and digital for now is fun - and yes to all you digital guys - I still own my cromes!

Outstanding post. ![]() When I was 16 I was trained as a Nikon Advanced Systems Specialist. In a nutshell, that the title bestowed upon thee who complete Nikon sales training. Since then I have always preferred Nikon over Canon when it comes to 35mm. However, I think Nikon digital cameras are outdone by Canon's product line. Your point of rugged quality is dead nuts on either way. |

I have to say Nikon. Hands down. My Nikons have outperformed everything else I've ever used, and have some of the best lenses available.
When I travel, I still shoot film, I still love working with film and my travel rig is an old Nikon FE2 that has been abused half way around the globe and has never stopped working. I was shooting a civil unrest in San Sebastian in 2000 and the camera was knocked out of my hands and fell two stories to the street. Amazingly I recovered it and while the lens was destroyed, the camera didnt even need service. Thats why I use Nikon. I dont know how much plastic is in some of the newer Nikons, but the metal bodied Nikons are extremely rugged and will take a great amount of abuse in some pretty bad situations... I can go on and on with stories of the abuse this camera has taken... Nothing but a Nikon for me. |

"The D2X body design, while similar to that of the D2H, has been optimized for easy operation with emphasis on the convenient placement of camera buttons. The durability and waterdrop/dust-resistance of the D2X, however, doesn?t end with the body. Internal mechanisms such as the shutter unit and mirror balancer have also been designed for the maximum durability required of professional cameras." I'm quite happy with this camera and I feel that I will use it for years to come, it's at a point where it already takes better pictures (quality) than my 35MM film camera ever did. Plus it's simple to use and just feels right. I have not used the Cannon so I can not compare, but I don't see any reason given what this camera can already do, why I would upgrade it even if something faster/flashier came down the pike.

There is one very good reason to get the Canon, the full size chip (mark II or 5D). IF that appeals to you, then go canon.. For many "old timers" who are used to shooting 35mm film this is a big issue..but if you are somewhat new to this, it wont make much difference to you.
I would suggest these: Nikon D200 or D2X, Canon 1ds mark II or 5D. In the end the camera is not going to make that much difference..the quality of the lens is very very important, and your ability to put something nice in front of that lens, and have it properly lighted and posed. With that being said, I have a D2X and love it..use it both for web content and print work. I started with a fuji s2 but my print customers wanted higher resolution, and since i already had nikon glass, the decision for me was easy.. Good luck. |

the 5D is great for wedding photographers, (yes I have one, later sold it) but the BEST camera you have listed is the D200. The D200 is the EXACT same camera as Nikons bigdawg D2X except it doesnt do rapid crop framing (which you'll never use anyways)
The 30D&5D dont come close to quality and features vs. the D200 plus the 5D is a full $1000 more expensive. I only use my Mark II and my D200 and I'm thinking of selling the mark II for another D200 (mainly because of weight issues at 10 hours weddings)
